RPG Talk and Castlevania Shenanigans

Boomp3.com (Run time: 7:53)

“All these resources are going to this?” we wonder today as Konami announces that there will be a new Castlevania game coming to the Xbox 360 and PS3. Also, Jeremy schools Carlos on some Star Ocean and they chat it up RPG-style.

The new Star Wars: The Force Unleashed novel topped The New York Times bestsellers list this past weekend under the “hardcover fiction” category. While I certainly want to check out the book myself, I’m willing to wait to play the video game first. I certainly want to be surprised with the story and have been avoiding any spoilers, including books.

September could end up being the most exciting month of 2008 for Xbox 360 releases. Personally, I know I will be picking up at least 5 games in September. I’m sure Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will be the top seller, but there are several other games that could surprise us. Which Xbox 360 titles are you planning to buy in September? We’d like to know.

I’ve finally had the time to run through the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed demo on Xbox LIVE a few times.  The demo starts you out with “the apprentice” having a conversation with his master, Darth Vader.  This really sets the tone for the demo and hopefully we’ll see many conversations like this in the full game.

You start the level oboard a giant ship and your goal is to kill everyone and everything.  Before you go on your rampage, it’s a lot of fun to start picking up random containers and throw them wherever you please with your powers.   The demo also starts you off with numerous force abilities including dash, defend, the saber attack, high jump, Force Lightning, Force Push and Force Grip.  While nearly all work flawlessly with the simple control scheme, I wasn’t too thrilled with the defending ability.  While standing still, it’s easy to defend against blaster attacks, but it’s a little tricky to defend yourself while moving.  Other than that, movement is fairly fluid and feels right.  Flinging objects at your whim is probably the #1 aspect of the demo.  It’s definitely a fun feeling to fling a canister at a moving Tie-Fighter to take it out of the sky.

The kind people at G4 sent us the latest episode of the ‘MMO Report’ in an email. They talk a little about Star Trek Online, which is probably the one thing I want to know the most about in the MMO world right now. Here’s what they had to say:

Once again, The MMO Report comes correct to school your ass with knowledge. And yes, we have been listening to a lot of Run DMC in the office recently. This week, Casey gives you all the information we have on Star Trek Online, brings you a new segment that will tell you where to look for those over-priced figures you spend your hard earned dollars on, and about an MMO boss that takes 24 hours to take down. That is what I call dedication.

Big Blue Bubble just announced that they’re bringing Canada’s favorite game on ice to WiiWare. ‘Hockey Allstar Shootout’ will be pretty much the first game of it’s kind on WiiWare. I’m not sure why they spell it “allstar” instead of “all star” but I guess that’s how they roll in Ontario. In this game, the Wii Remote will basically become your hockey stick as you compete in 3 different skills competitions.

The modes include Sharp Shooter where you break targets as quickly as you can, Power Shot where the hardest shot wins and Head to Head Shootout. I haven’t seen any videos or screens yet, but the game sounds interesting.

International Movie Star/Model Maggie Q to star in the upcoming EA Racing Game Need For Speed Undercover.  Coming to the PS3, X360, Wii, DS, PSP and PC November 18th.

Don’t know how they do it, but the Need for Speed team keeps rolling in hot chicks to star in their video games.  The “Balls of Fury” ping pong star will be featured in EA’s Need For Speed: Undercover.  I’m a fan of Need for Speed, and their great in-game videos.  They’ve used very attractive women before, but I think Maggie Q is their biggest star.  I guess Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift motivated Maggie Q.

EA’s Need for Speed Undercover takes the franchise back to its roots and re-introduces break-neck cop chases, the world’s hottest cars and spectacular highway battles.

Need for Speed Undercover features a deep and engaging story of spectacular Hollywood-style live-action that will transport players into the fictional world of the Tri-City Bay Area,” said Bill Harrison, Need for Speed Undercover Executive Producer. “Working with talent the caliber of Maggie Q allows us to deliver an unparalleled level of storytelling that will keep players engaged in between 180-mile-an-hour races.”

Maggie Q, who has starred in Mission Impossible III and Live Free or Die Hard, plays Federal Agent Chase Linh, a seductive handler who recruits and guides players as they go undercover. Players will take on dangerous jobs and compete in races in order to infiltrate and takedown a ruthless international crime syndicate.

“I’ve always been a fan of racing games and working on Need for Speed Undercover was an amazing experience,” said Maggie Q. “I was so impressed by the scope and quality of the overall production that goes into a videogame these days. It was like any other day on a Hollywood set; I felt right at home. The Black Box team is doing tremendous work here and I can’t wait to see the final game.”

Need for Speed Undercover is being developed by Black Box in Vancouver, B.C., and is slated to be in stores North America on November 18 and in Europe on November 21. The game will be available for Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, and Wii™ as well as the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, Nintendo DS™, PSP® (PlayStation® Portable) handheld entertainment system, PC and mobile.

Some may think that portable gaming already has enough puzzle games, but I believe there’s certainly room for ‘Colour Cross’, the paint-by-numbers style puzzle-strategy game for the Nintendo DS. The game by Rising Star will include 150 puzzles and should keep any casual gamer happy for many hours. The game should be on shelves in November. I have yet to see any gameplay footage, but I’m sure it’s out there somewhere. Feel free to drop a link in comments below if you know where to find it. New screens were recently sent out and we have posted them below:

The game we’ve been waiting several years for is just about ready to be unleashed on the world. To check out the first official trailer and webcast for the game, check out www.StarTrekOnline.com.  The video and webcast were first shown at the annual Star Trek convention in Las Vegas over the weekend.  Set in the year 2409, you will be able to captain a Federation or Klingon ship throughout the known galaxy.  Many Star Trek games have failed in the past, but I have a really good feeling about this one.
