One of the cool aspects of Soulcalibur IV is the critical finish moves. Unfortunately, it’s kind of hard figuring out how exactly to use the damn systems. I’ve been playing SC IV for a while now and finally pulled off my first critical finish. It wasn’t as hard as I was making it out to be. Here’s the steps you’ll need to take:

  1. Wait for your opponent’s “soul gauge” to flash red.
  2. Engage them with a strong attack.  If you land a strong attack while your enemy is blocking or execute a “guard impact” when they are attacking you, you have just completed what’s called a “soul crush”.
  3. For a very short moment, your opponent will flash red (their bar will be flashing red and their character will flash red).  Tap the Left Button immediately and if you were quick enough, the fight will be over as you destroy them with a critical finish.  Just make sure you tap it quickly, because there’s not much room for error.
That’s really all there is to critical finishes.  It took me some time to figure that out on my own.  At first, I was trying to tap the LB just when their meter was flashing red and nothing would happen.  Perform 100 critical finishes during your time with SC IV and it’s worth 30 Gamerscore.

Release Date: July 29, 2008
Platform: Xbox 360, PS3
Developer: Project Soul
Publisher: Namco Bandai
Genre: Weapons-based 3D Fighting
Players: 1-2 Players; Local and Online
MSRP: $59.99

The soul swords never seem to take a break as Namco Bandai keeps bringing them back into the fold with every iteration of the Soulcalibur series. Fortunately, Soulcalibur IV lives up to its namesake and brings with it an online mode (finally!), tunes up the fighting mechanics a bit, and, of course, takes breast-bouncing technology to a new height.

Gameplay

SCIV enters next-gen systems with the same four-button system as before and, as fans will be surprised to see, slows the action down a bit to create more balanced, strategic fights. Also, some of the characters’ moves list and play styles have been altered. Subtle, but noticeable, and veterans of the series might have some adjusting to do.

Single player is never the main focus in fighting games, but Namco Bandai has always done well with their games’ console renditions and SCIV is no different by giving you a story mode, “Tower of Lost Souls,” a deep and varied “Character Creation,” and online play.

Gold is the main currency which can be easily obtained to unlock characters and other bonuses. Kudos to Project Soul for making it possible to unlock most of the characters within the first hour of playtime with the game.

The newest ‘bad guy’ in Soul Calibur IV will be Algol. Plain and simple! Below is an excerpt from the Character Designer, Hideo Yoshi. SC in the past had some freaky looking guys, but the screens below show how intimidating Algol will be to face.

We aimed to make a character that is the “king” of an ultra ancient civilization and a character that obviously proves the setting of being the strongest character ever in SC series.

We’re less than 34 days away from the release of the highly anticipated Soul Calibur 4. The good people over at Rocket XL have released a new widget that we were extremely excited about. The widget allows you to view various clips, screenshots and extras from the game. Hopefully we’ll be reviewing the title in the near future. I have many fond memories from the series and it looks like this installment will be by far the best one yet.

While Body Painting on Real Women is accepted, are their Video Game counterparts? Check out why naked women with Body Paint is somehow overlooked.

Many games display women as sex symbols. Body Painting women does no different. With all the games that star hot women as either the main character (Lara Croft), or playable fighting characters (Faye Valentine) I dig into the subject and ask “Is there a viewable difference between Video Game Babes and Body Painting?” Dead or Alive is a great example on how women in gaming and real women with body paint visually “look the same”.

Apr 19

The official release date for Soul Calibur 4 was finally dropped.  The game will see life on the PS3 and Xbox 360 on July 29.  Both games are pretty much the same, so the decision of which version to pick up will really come down to choosing between Vader and Yoda.  Vader comes with the PS3 version and Yoda comes with the 360 version.  The over expanded boob jobs for SC IV are the same with both versions, so no choices to make there.
