Title: Rock Band 2

Developer: Harmonix

Platforms: X360, PS3, Wii, PS2

Release Dates: Sept. 15th (X360), Quarter 4 (PS3, Wii, PS2)

We all have been hearing the songs that will be available on Rock Band 2. So I decided to use this post to set the record straight. Just recently we also caught wind that for a small fee of $4.99, you’ll be able to copy all 55 songs, except Metallica “Enter Sandman”, Black Sabbath “Paranoid” and Tokio Hotel “Monsoon” from Rock Band 1 to your console in order to play them on Rock Band 2. In our podcast, I asked Carlos about the benefit and he mentioned the ability to play all your songs from one location. I’ll give him that, but to pay an additional $5 for convience annoys me.

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

MTV’s The American Mall is out this week and proves that even though it’s a musical from the giant that popularized music videos, it doesn’t mean they can produce a great movie. TAM revolves around a couple of aspiring songwriters who happen to live out their lives in a mall, fully going after the upper-teen crowd.

The problem is that even their focus group might be put off by this shoddy production with talented (albeit unknown) actors, ridiculous sayings, and forgettable songs. It tries to feed off of the popularity of Disney’s High School Musical, but is sub par in comparison.

An average mall as the main, and only, setting further cements its inferiority to Disney’s for-kids musical. It could’ve been an interesting setting, but it becomes tiresome to see store after store that only serve to market different products (i.e. Rock Band) and bolster brand identity (cough, Sears, cough). A mash up reminiscent of Kiss meeting Six Flags, but to worse results.

Besides the generic setting, unlike a good musical, the story bits and musical performances in TAM are integrated poorly, one cuts into the other abruptly every time; seamless transitions were clearly not the goal for The American Mall.

From what it seems, in-sync choreography was not a central focus of the film either as the timing is clearly off every time a song is performed. The actors look dazed and confused while they prance around for every song break, indicating that little time and effort went into rehearsing for the final cut.

Poor choreography might have deserved a pass if the songs were good but, besides the few that standout, prove to be forgettable titles. “Dreaming Wide Awake,” “New You,” and “Sorry’s Not Enough,” are about the only redeemable songs from The American Mall. So much so, that the first song mentioned is actually performed three times during the film.

It’s a shame that the most important part of the film, music, is botched because the actors actually pull off strong performances regardless of the tepid story. TAM is full of sexy, energetic leads that would’ve worked wonders if they had better source material.

RANDOM MOVIE COUNTS:

  • “Backspace” Annoyingly Used as a Word: 2
  • Shameless “Rock Band,” the game, Plugs: 6
  • Signs of the Declining State of Sears: 3
  • iPod Worthy Songs: 3 out of 10 Mediocre “Songs”

Nina Dobrev, as Ally, puts on a charismatic performance that brings light to every interaction she has with the rest of the cast. The movie shows glimmers of hope every time she’s confronted with the mall owner’s fiery redhead daughter, Madison, as their arguments are rightly heated and believable.

While the movie’s titular “American mall” might bring in the teenage girl in all of us to watch, the single setting actually becomes one of its biggest crutches being that there’s no variety and all the backgrounds look the same. There are a few good scenes and a couple of great songs littered throughout (sometimes times three), but are scatter shot and not enough to carry an otherwise typical musical about people trying to “make it.” If you missed the premiere presentation on MTV and want to see it, don’t bother looking for it on DVD…this reeks of “Generic Brand.”

DVD Release: August 12, 2008

[Editor’s Note: Walking down the aisles of your favorite retailer you’ll see movies that you’ve never heard of. Even if you’d like to know how they fare no one cares enough to review them! That’s where “Movie Watch” comes in…oh, and we’ll try to cover movies on Xbox Live from time to time. Because if you’re gonna spend those confusing Microsoft points on something other than games, it better be worth it, right?]

Dealing with remixes is a difficult task. How much of the original track is left in the mix? Is this even a remix, I can’t tell the difference? When Kylie Minogue decided to go the house/dance/pop-hybrid route on her new album, the result was mixed, no pun intended. The tracks that work really work, and the tracks that don’t are of course your run-of-the-mill pop anthems.

What is even more interesting to consider, however, is the amount of producers and artists who tend to flock to the remix table once a pop queen like Kylie invites them all with a thumping, dance beat record like X. The remixes for “In My Arms” and “Wow” are staggering in quality and melody, without a doubt made for the harder dance floors.

Canada’s MSTRKRFT make a habit out of remixing established artists, and their remix of Kylie’s “Wow” is, perhaps, the best damn song made for Audiosurf (with a notable exception of their remix of Justice’s “D.A.N.C.E.”).

Time to move on from the sludging, slow and melancholic post-rock/hardcore acts we’ve presented before, and go electronic here on Kezins. What better way to do that than with this awesome track from MSTRKRFT.

Five bucks to whoever beats my ninja high score…

To continue the trend we started this iteration of Audiosurf Song Of The Week, we present to you a challenge. In the same vein as Cult Of Luna, Isis makes dynamic audio landscapes that translates beautifully in Audiosurf. If you have the patients. And really enjoy the music.

That is certainly true for everything, but this kind of music will either bore you, or transcend you. And when you hit that slope to the song’s crescendo in Audiosurf, Isis‘ “Garden Of Light” can transcend the most skeptic of listener. The follow-up to 2004’s commercial and critical breakthrough album, Panopticon, 2006’s In The Absence Of Truth sees the band take an even more melodic and softer approach than ever before.

“Garden Of Light” is the pinnacle crescendo of the album, that leaves the listener in a state of melancholic happiness. Themes of hope are introduced, both lyrically and musically, that ends the album on a perfect note. Front man Aaron Turner also decides to introduce a new theme for an Isis album, something that both prevails its obstacles and succumbs to its own infancy.

Themes only grow stronger for each Isis release, and the music along with it. Panopticon was the perfected version of the “control tower” theme, being in its third iteration. With the introduction of a new musical and lyrical theme on In The Absence Of Truth, the album actually suffers because of it. Yet, how unestablished the sound may be, it may be the perfect continuation of the band’s artistic progression.

This is the WORST song EVER!  I know that even mentioning the song will get the girl more attention than she deserves but it’s like a fart.  Even though it stinks, you invite everyone over for a whiff.  So smell away and laugh at the assclown.

It’s Heidi Montag of The Hills fame, singing ‘Fashion’.  Please, listen to the words!  Disclaimer: We’re not responsible if this song causes instant death or bleeding from the ears!

Snoop is finding ways to make sure every human knows who he is one way or another. The guy did a country song with twangs and all. For a California brother, it ain’t half-bad. Country’s been imitating for so long, it’s not like the genre has a clear sound anymore, which opens the way for people like Snoop Dog and Jessica Simpson to break in. Snoop is well on his way to country stardom. His wife is getting in on the action too, with her drunk driving arrest this past weekend. Go ahead Snoop. I ain’t mad at ya. Especially when you team up with Willie Nelson. Much better than Nelly’s team up with Tim McGraw. Listen to Snoop Dog and Willie Nelson right here: http://perezhilton.com/2008-06-18-this-is-not-a-joke-40.

We kick off the continuation of Audiosurf Song of the Week-series with the Swedish, post-hardcore act, Cult of Luna. Today is the European release date (July 16 for America) for their fifth studio album, Eternal Kingdom, and so it seems fitting to recommend a song to surf along to, and let your mind and emotions just slip away…

The song “Dim” on their fourth effort, Somewhere Along the Highway, is perhaps their softest song to date, and is a journey well worth taking. A track off of the latest album has not been deciphered yet and approved Audiosurf material; it seems like the songs are not as fitting as they are on the other albums. Hit the break for more on Cult of Luna, song recommendations and similar artists. Continue reading »

The above song is called ‘Schweine’ by artist Glukoza Nostra, 22 years of age. It is a goof on Hitler and the Nazis as pigs and is quite funny. The song is played towards the beginning of GTA. Glukoza Nostra is a young Russian artist with the innocence and presence of Britney when she first started out. She has been in various TV shows in Russia, one being “Stars on Ice” which is interesting because in Russia basically everyone can skate with all the snow and ice! I am part Russian so it is a pleasure to bring you this wonderfully catchy tune and video.

Glukoza Nostra - Schweine is the first song which plays on Vladivostok when Roman picks you up. It refers to the schwein Adolf Hitler in nazi World War II. Translated lyrics on the semi-official homepage: http://www.glukozanostra.com/lyrics.php#five
