It happened. The fatal “red ring of death” came in and swooped this writer’s Xbox 360 away. The system might have sensed the excitement over beating people online in Soulcalibur IV with Maxi-inspired “Carissa-foo” and shut down.

We gathered up a bit of info from around Kezins HQ and found out that half the staff has suffered from the dreaded “red ring.”

Will’s Xbox 360 crapped out after eleven (11!) months in use, Jesper’s is still up and running (or it should be, last we heard of him), and this writer’s took a dirt nap after a year and ten months of service. Juan? His can’t “red ring” because he doesn’t have one, but we’ll give his phantom system the benefit of the doubt and say it’d be living the good, gaming life.

What about you guys? Is your system still up and running? Or have you stayed away from the problematic Xbox 360?

Most of you have heard about how the Red Faction: Guerilla Beta is now free to play.  Originally, it was going to cost players $15 to take part in it.  Now they have a deal where you can play it for free, but have to fill out a lengthy survey at FilePlanet.  Before you waste your time filling out the survey, keep in mind the fact that they are out of keys.  They will also not tell you this until you have completed the long survey.  It’s kind of shady if you ask me, but that’s how companies are sometimes. I certainly felt misled by the promotion and wasted 5-10 minutes of my time and got nothing in return.  They should really mention that keys are out prior to having you waste time…

Here’s the link but don’t expect a key:

The Red Faction: Guerilla Beta just received a very nice update for the Xbox 360 testing going on right now.  Gaming Today recently reported on the update and it certainly looks nice. The following changes have been reported:

  • Fixed clients seeing excessive lag when performing destruction with the sledgehammer.
  • Fixed a few crashes during gameplay.
  • Fixed players sometimes dropping out during matchmaking.
  • Fixed clients not seeing the countdown timer during matchmaking before there are enough players to launch the game.
  • Fixed the countdown timer halting at zero without starting a match
  • Fixed the excessive darkness of Deadzone.
  • Added NAT type to the bottom right of the main menu.
  • Changed patience dots to not cause a line break when matchmaking.
  • Changed “BACK” to “DONE” on the match results screen.
  • All party members can now hit Y to bring up their friends list in the party lobby, rather than just the leader.
  • Finishing a match now awards 25 XP, rather than 5 XP.
  • Removed the backpack info popup when you pick up a backpack.
That looks like about it for now, but Red Faction: Guerilla is shaping up to be a “must-have” game.  The full version of the game will be released sometime during the first quarter of 2009.  What’s interesting about the game is the developer’s choice to make the game as a third-person shooter.  Prior to Guerilla, all Red Faction games were played as FPS titles.  Supposedly, the switch was made due to the fact that it’s easier to see falling and flying objects in 3rd person.

A leaked set list is almost never exactly like the final product, but it gives a pretty good idea of what to expect.  The Guitar Hero IV: World Tour set list was leaked and it doesn’t look too bad.  When Rock Band came out, I had mentioned to people that my Guitar Hero days were over.  With the additional of superior drums, it looks like GH is going to take the music game crown back in the near future.  Check out the list after the jump!

Will Red vs. Blue ever get old?  I highly doubt it.  The classic machinima is back with “Reconstruction” and things are looking better than ever.  These new videos almost make me want to go back to playing Halo 2 again.

At the Destructoid NARP in Cinci, Poor Ninos 360 died…. :(

You just never know when the red ring will strike!  The above video was uploaded by one of our friends, bunnyXablaze on MySpaceTV.  Their reaction to the red ring of death is funny to say the least.  When my launch 360 bricked, my response included a long array of expletives.  While I love my 360, I still recognize that it’s basically a piece of crap.

New trailer for C&C: Red Alert 3… looks just like Red Alert 2. I’ve personally loved C&C: Generals but let’s see if Red Alert 3 can keep my attention on strategic gaming. ‘Generals’ had the Global Liberation Army (GLA) who kicked some serious terrorist ass!

After seven years, Red Alert returns! After a time travel mission goes awry, a new superpower has been thrust onto the world stage and World War III is raging. The Empire of the Rising Sun has risen in the East, making WW III a three-way struggle between the Soviets, the Allies, and the Empire with armies fielding wacky and wonderful weapons and technologies such as Tesla coils, heavily armed War Blimps, teleportation, armored bears, intelligent dolphins, floating island fortresses, and transforming tanks.

I didn’t realize strip poker games were still popular, but obviously I was wrong. Red Lips Games has released two screens from their new game ‘Western Strip Poker’. The game is available via digital download from the Red Lips Games site. The game is available for Windows or Mac. Western Strip Poker is a new remake of the classic computer poker games designed in an old style “wild west era”. Two screens have recently surfaced from the game and are located below. For those of you expecting nude screens, you have to purchase the game and prove your age to see that.
