For those of you that anxiously waited for midnight to strike, you probably noticed a message telling you “A System update is available”.  This is probably the longest feeling update, or maybe it’s because I couldn’t wait much longer.  Nevertheless, update 2.40 is now live under mrjuandrful’s PS3.  Trophies here I come!

Go get the update, play for a bit and come back here to read more of our funnies.

The much anticipated release of the coolest firmware to date will be released on Wednesday July 2nd.  To go along with the in-game XMB will also be PS3’s Trophy System.  Here’s what we can expect and what game we can expect to see the Trophy system in use:

Super Stardust HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released in June 2007, will be the first game to leverage Trophies and will offer a variety of trophies. Trophy support in Super Stardust HD will be available for first-time users who purchase the game soon after firmware v2.40 is released, while those who previously purchased and downloaded the title will be prompted to install a free patch.

PS3 users can expect to see additional games bringing Trophies support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond, providing even greater opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and compete with friends. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:

  • BUZZ! Quiz TV
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • MotorStorm Pacific Rift
  • NBA 09 - PS3
  • PAIN
  • PixelJunk Eden
  • Resistance 2
  • SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
  • Warhawk

To further emphasize the community aspects of this system software update, the amount of people you can add to your PSN friends list has been doubled, to 100.

I will be really impressed if Sony goes back to previous first-party games.  Resistance would be a great reason to blow the dust off the cover and slide that bad boy in!  Anyone interested in Pixel Junk Monsters Trophies?

Latest info is that Sony will not release this Firmware update until closer to E3. What a better way to greet all the E3 nerds than to say, “You’re here and you can’t see the firmware we just released to everyone else.” Unless they’re flying to LA with their PS3’s… doubt it or they go to the Sony booth, damn you E3 nerds!!!. Anywho, Here’s what you can expect through XMB:

* Friend category
* View, send, receive messages
* Manage downloads
* Set the vibration feature of the controller
* Sign in to PlayStation Network
* Register friends
* Manage Bluetooth devices
* Terminate the game
* Music category
* Use the system BGM
* Work the system BGM operation panel
* Settings category
* Assign controllers
* View profiles
* Game category
* Set audio devices
* Use the voice changer

Let the battle begin. PS3 owners will FINALLY get what Xbox360 owners have grown to love for years now. In-game XMB (cross media bar), and trophies (achievements).

A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,” an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements. We’ve talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you can’t wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly.
