On October 21st, Bioware and Lucas Arts are set to make an announcement on their latest MMO. Will we finally see another Star Wars MMO?
Here it is, cut and dry. Bioware and LucasArts will be making an announcement on October 21st at 2pm PT. Many expect Bioware/LucasArtsto announce their long awaited title Knights of the Old Republic MMO. Some sites are reporting a brand new Star Wars MMO. We’ll soon see.
Computer and Video Games has let us know that we’ll be seeing the official announcement of the next KOTOR game in a “matter of weeks.” We’ve reported on this before, but we’ll finally be able to (hopefully!) see a few more concrete details in the near future.
The first two games were incredibly fun to play and proved that with proper care a great RPG could be made out of the “Star Wars” universe. KOTOR II was developed by Obsidian and this new MMO — from what we’ve heard — will have the original team, Bioware, back at the helm.
I recall hearing some rumors that a Halo-based MMO was in the works. After a while, nothing else was heard about it. Apparently the rumors were 100% correct. Unfortunately, it was being developed by Ensemble. Ensemble closed their doors and all of their projects were halted. Will the Halo MMO end up being a discarded project that will eventually be forgotten? No one really knows. I’d assume Microsoft would take off where Ensemble left off to get some extra mileage out of the franchise but you just never know with these guys.
The kind people at G4 sent us the latest episode of the ‘MMO Report’ in an email. They talk a little about Star Trek Online, which is probably the one thing I want to know the most about in the MMO world right now. Here’s what they had to say:
Once again, The MMO Report comes correct to school your ass with knowledge. And yes, we have been listening to a lot of Run DMC in the office recently. This week, Casey gives you all the information we have on Star Trek Online, brings you a new segment that will tell you where to look for those over-priced figures you spend your hard earned dollars on, and about an MMO boss that takes 24 hours to take down. That is what I call dedication.
If you were wondering about the new Star Trek MMO, it looks like gameplay will be revealed on August 10, 2008 at the Annual Star Trek Convention in Vegas. If you can’t show up for the event, the new gameplay will also be unveiled online (www.startrekonline.com). I’m certainly excited to find out more about this game. Being a huge Star Trek fan, I have felt let down in the past by the piles of mediocre ST games. I’ve already heard a few good things about the game from the Cryptic camp, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed that this gameplay video will knock our socks off. The game was initially announced back in 2004 under development by Perpetual Entertainment. Perpetual folded in early 2008 and the game was nearly complete from what I understand…
Well, when we first reported that Knights of the Old Republic 3 was coming, we were right. A report on Portfolio.com has confirmed that LucasArts and BioWare are working together to bring KOTOR 3 as an MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online). In an interview at E3 this week, Electronic Arts chief executive John Riccitiello said that EA is working on the next version of Star Wars game Knights of the Old Republic, and it will most certainly have a massively multiplayer online component to it.
Recently, Lucas Arts laid off numerous employees and one of them supposedly spilled the beans to Kotaku about upcoming titles. Here are a few that are in the works according to Kotaku and the disgruntled ex-employee:
KOTOR 3 (They say it’s an MMO)
Battlefront 3
The Official Indiana Jones game
another LEGO game based on the Indy universe
a lightsaber game for the wii (but no lightsaber peripherals)
The odds of these being true are fairly good. There was no doubt in my mind that Lucas has been actively working on KOTOR 3. It’s just a surprise that it might be an MMO. I’m hoping it’s not, because an MMO would be a big deviation from one of the greatest game series of all-time. KOTOR and KOTOR 2 were awesome titles. I don’t see why they would change the formula now.
Lockpick Entertainment has been hard at work on a closed beta for Dreamlords The Awakening, an MMO RPG and RTS mashup, and is opening the doors for everyone to check out the game. They’re quick to point out the following in their press release:
* Free to Play.
* Recruit and manage your troops, form alliances with other players or crush them…
* Bring your Dreamlord with you all the time in the game, equip it with various exciting gear and cool stuff.
* Simplified rules system, easy to get into – hard to master.
The sequel continues the story of “the mystical Dreamlords,” as they traverse pieces of land called Patrias. Seems like an interesting enough plot for a hack-and-slash MMO. Most importantly…its free! Let us know what you think of it in the comments.
These are the first in-match action screenshots released for Football SuperStars, which has been a PC game on my radar for some time now. Back in 2007, the game producers promised that the game would be “the most realistic football game there has ever been”. It certainly looks like it’s headed that way. The game is visually stunning and is really one of the most ambitious sports games in recent memory. Football SuperStars is basically the first meta MMO title of it’s kind. From what I understand, you will be able to download the game for free as well.
