You’d think that being $50 cheaper than a Wii now would boost Microsoft’s expectations and hopes for its system’s success sky high. Apparently not, as Microsoft’s Senior Vice President of Interactive Enterainment Business, Don Mattrick, told BusinessWeek:

“I’m not at a point where I can say we’re going to beat Nintendo,” Mattrick said, followed closely by a big BUT “We will sell more consoles this generation than Sony.”

Settling for second place? Might it just be a clever rouse to lower expectations and be pleasantly surprised if the system takes over Nintendo’s current lead? While it seems unlikely…who knows what kind of damage the $199 Xbox 360 Arcade unit will do when holiday shoppers this year can’t find themselves a Wii of their own.

If you are into video games, you more than likely read Edge - the videogames magazine and website. They have just awarded Halo 3 the Edge Award for Innovation at this year’s Edinburg Interactive Festival. This was a surprising choice considering the game was going up against Grand Theft Auto IV, Portal, Rock Band, Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Fit. Although Halo 3 is my favorite game of the ones listed above, I feel like Portal and Rock Band were actually more innovative.

According to the reps at Edge, the game won due to it’s “integration and coherence of Halo 3’s online content”.  While I certainly believe that the Halo series has one of the best online  setups in console history, it wasn’t a huge improvement over Halo 2.  Maybe I say this because I miss Halo 2’s maps…

We just received the following press release from SouthPeak Interactive concerning Ninjatown for the Nintendo DS.  We’ve seen some strange cryptic press releases from game companies in the past, but this one is just simply strange:

Introducing Ninja Dropping…

“He who smelled it, dealt it.”

Just when you thought it was safe to walk around in Ninjatown barefoot, Ninja Dropping appears out of nowhere and makes you very unhappy. Thing is, it’s not really his fault – he’s just dropped here and there by Wee Ninjas on the go, so what else is he to do except do his duty as a doody?

Motto

“He who smelled it, dealt it.

Considered one of the best PC games of all time, Warren Spector’s (who works for Disney Interactive now) Deus Ex will be made available on GameTap for free play after an initial 15-second ad-gasm.

While a bit dated, the game warrants a play — it’s free! — as it was one of the first shooters to incorporate RPG elements into the gameplay. It’s not the most trigger-happy title, but its branching paths and cyperpunk story line should keep you well entertained. Deus Ex 3 is currently in development by Eidos Montreal so this should serve as a primer before that game sees the light of day.

E3 2008 Booths

E3’s plans this year have been laid out and put in a fancy site map you see above, via Kotaku. My favorite Gaming Today editor posted the above video on Saturday. I was completely over Mortal Kombat many years ago, but this game may actually have what it takes to suck me back in.

A hot topic right now is the story about how the ASA has ordered the game’s publisher, Eidos Interactive, not to print or broadcast any of the ads again after their ruling that the poster was “graphic and too shocking to be seen in an untargeted medium”.

I thought about it and decided that the poster wasn’t really shocking and I’ll post it here for you guys to decide. Our blog base is somewhat of an untargeted medium as well, but fortunately we could care less about the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) or any other similar group. Why don’t we just start burning books and artwork next? I completely understand that some materials are not appropriate for general audiences, but this isn’t one of them. I expect this sort of thing in America these days, but apparently the U.K. has been steadily jumping on the anti-game/politically correct bandwagon as well. Click on the image below to see a higher resolution view!

Were you totally shocked and upset after seeing that? I hope your answer is “of course not”. To be honest, I’ve seen more shocking things in an episode of SpongeBob on Nick. The ASA is supposedly an independent body set up to create a level playing field for advertisers. It seems to me they are simply a body set up to play into the hands of special interests.

The Advertising Standards Authority is the independent body set up by the advertising industry to police the rules laid down in the advertising codes. The strength of the self-regulatory system lies in both the independence of the ASA and the support and commitment of the advertising industry, through the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP), to the standards of the codes, protecting consumers and creating a level playing field for advertisers…
