Jim Sterling recently posted an article on Destructoid concerning the issue of Street Fighter IV and lag. Apparently, the biggest problem facing the Capcom team and Street Fighter IV is major lag during online battles. Hopefully, the can fix the issue, because poor online gameplay due to major lag will certainly bury this game’s hopes of being one of the best fighting games. Here’s what Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono had to say:

Obviously lag will be a huge problem for online play. We’re working on it. It’s quite difficult for 3D Street Fighter at the moment,” explained Ono. In order to prevent the lag we’re thinking about trying to balance it up at [the] user interface level and input timing. We still haven’t got a complete plan as yet. We’re still working on it. That’s all we can say at the moment.”

Street Fighter IV may be the coolest fighting game I have ever seen in the visual department, so we can only hope everything else falls in place. I’ve never been a huge fan of Street Fighter, but the interesting visuals in SF IV have certainly peaked my interest in the series.

If you are a fan of the site, then you probably read our original ‘7 Greatest Video Game Urban Legends’ post, which quickly became our most popular article ever. We thought it was about time to bring back the post with updates and new information.

We all have heard of them, swore to have done them or know someone whose cousin has. That’s right, I’m talking about Video Game Urban Legends (VGUL). No, we’re not going to talk about the munchkin in the back of “Wizard of Oz” who supposedly hangs himself from the tree. We’re not talking about how there is a ghost in the window in “3 Men and a Baby” who died in that house. Not Bigfoot or Loch Ness. We’re talking Video Games…. We’re talking Urban Legends in Video Games.

We searched high and low to bring to you, our latest redux installment of these Urban Legends, and hope you enjoy what we have come up with.

Some of the younglings out there probably don’t know much about gaming in 1987, but for those of us who were there, it was really a sweet year in gaming. It’s tough to pick out 10 awesome games from one particular year, but 1987 was real easy. I was ten years old at the time and owned most of the game systems available on the market. Back in early 1987, I was the only kid in the neighborhood with a Sega Master System and probably the only person who didn’t have a Nintendo Entertainment System. This worked out well for me because I could play Sega games any time I wanted and just go to any of my friends’ houses to play NES games. I eventually landed a NES at the end of that year in a trade that involved me giving up the Millenium Falcon and a 1985 Donruss Dwight Gooden rookie card for the console and a couple games. It turns out giving up the Millenium Falcon may have been a bad idea, but Dwight Gooden turned out to be a crack head, so the value of the card dwindled over the years.

With that said, my picks for the “Top Ten Video Games of 1987″ follow. These are selections from games I have played thoroughly. If an awesome game from 1987 didn’t make the list, it’s probably because I didn’t play it or because I didn’t think it was that awesome.

In an interview with Gamasutra, Simon Jeffery, CEO of Sega of America, let out that Yu Suzuki is no longer with the company. Yu Suzuki was the creator of Virtua Fighter, Outrun, and his bank-breaking project Shenmue, as well as other games.

Virtua Fighter 5 was not directed by Suzuki so that series should be safe to continue, but it adds another nail to Shenmue III’s coffin — the game fans have been clamoring for since the sequel barely made it stateside on Xbox.

This writer dug the first Shenmue on Dreamcast in 2000 which made use of a cheesy soap-opera story and quick-time events that were later used in God of War and Resident Evil 4. It also had probably the best forklift racing, if only, in a video game. What do you guys think of the series? Or is further proof of its “never being released” status meaningless to you?

Comic Con has never been a place to make new announcements or unveil any big surprises, but its still a nice little convention that gives the public (along with the press) access to early builds of games usually presented at E3 first.

I was fortunate enough to meet up with the 1up crew (thanks for the invite, Tina!) on Saturday and they got me into the sold-out event to try out a few upcoming titles:

Street Fighter 4

Capcom’s latest in the Street Fighter series seems a bit confused: it updates the visuals to a beautiful cel-shaded look but scales back the complexity introduced in the Street Fighter III games. Regardless, I sat down with with the arcade version of the fighter and won a match against 1up’s Tina Sanchez…which she claims happened because she answered a phone call. By “claims,” I mean she actually received a call.

Judging by the one match I played, fans will be happy with the game as the characters animate well and and the graphics add a welcoming sheen to the experience. It might feel like a nod to Street Fighter II, but I came away impressed with the brief demonstration.

Soulcalibur 4

I tried the game out on Saturday (and beat Tina with the maybe-cheap Yoda), but it’s already out so its kind of meaningless to give impressions of a game available now. So go ahead, buy the game and stay tuned to Kezins’s review of the game shortly.

Mega Man 9

The theme with the upcoming Mega Man game seems to be “retro devolved” in that the title is presented in graphics reminiscent of the 8-bit era. Yes, they didn’t even go with the just-as-retro 16-bit visuals. Regardless, trying out the two levels at Comic Con reminded me just how fun the gameplay still is for the revered series.

Makes me want to bust out my copy of Mega Man: Powered Up and Mega Man Collection to play and ready up for the incoming DLC game. It might have ancient 8-bit stylings, but the game appears to be just as hard and fun as you remember it to be.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

The line to this game seriously tested my patience but it was all worth it. I played what seemed like the first level of the game as Darth Vader knights his “Secret Apprentice,” and sends him out on his first mission.

From my playthrough, the force powers were well-implemented and could be used freely until your “force meter” winds down. Enemies, doors, hinges, barrels, etc. can all be manipulated and flung around at will. I had tons of fun pulling out bars where X-Wing fighters were zooming past and exploding right into my little “speed bump.”

Afro Samurai

This game based on the popular Spike TV show, Afro Samurai, which features the foul-mouth Samuel L. Jackson follows the American-anime’s art style perfectly. Plenty of dark colors and Japanese huts abound while you take down enemies in the streets.

While the controls made use of simple commands such as a slow-down, kick, and punch button the number of enemies forced me to vary up my combos a bit. The gameplay is said to be influenced by the soundtrack, but Comic Con’s noisy setting wasn’t ideal for experiencing this. So far, so good, though.

Dark Void

I got to play this game only briefly, but judging by that I noticed that the framerate wasn’t too good. Which isn’t a big deal, because the framerate is the final thing to get optimized in a game’s development.

Other than that, it played a bit like Gears of War with less gruesome kills and animations. I’ll be taking a wait-and-see approach with this game.

Castle Crashers

The full extent of how much I played the game can be wrapped up with this: I got my hands on the demo’s Xbox 360 controller and…that was it. The demo had been crowded up by 3 other players already and their wayward friend came up to me and ask “If I’d mind.”

I did mind, but decided to not be a jerk and gave up the controller, letting him experience the game with his friends. Eww. The game’s out August 27 on XBLA, though, so no biggie.

Well, that’s about all I played. Everything else was either really crowded or comic book-related; sadly, I had very little knowledge on them “graphic novels” to appreciate that aspect of the convention. I might just read up for next year’s show.

I blogged. Tina blogged. Check out the posts and comment, if you will.

In 1984 Arcade Galleria’s had their hands on an instant classic. Kung-Fu Master was a great action fighter game that included 5 floors of kicking and punching (and sweeping midgets).

The player takes the role of Keiji Thomas, a man in a Keikogi and slippers. Thomas’s girlfriend, Sylvia, has been kidnapped by “Mr. X”, and Thomas must fight through five side-scrolling floors full of enemies to rescue her.

The first floor of the temple contains Grippers (standard Kung Fu henchmen who charge Thomas and grab him, draining his life bar) and Knife Throwers (men who throw knives high or low). But subsequent levels introduce Tom Toms (small dwarves who can surprise Thomas by jumping on his head), poisonous moths, fire-breathing dragons (Thomas must punch or kick them before they breathe fire), snakes, and confetti balls. (These hang in mid-air for a few seconds and then explode into three pieces after a few seconds; Thomas must jump kick these before they explode. If Thomas is hit by any pieces of debris from an exploding confetti ball, he takes massive damage.)

Each of the five floors ends with a different boss who must be defeated before Thomas can climb the stairs to the next floor. The first two bosses are ordinary men armed with a stick and honed boomerangs, respectively. The third is a Giant, the fourth a Black Magician, and the fifth is Mr. X, a versatile Kung Fu master. Thomas must complete each floor within a fixed time. The timer starts at 2000. If it falls below 330, a warning sounds. If a boss defeats Thomas, the boss laughs. Although there are five bosses, the game only uses two different synthesized laughs.

Enjoy your Old School Sunday! Hii-Ya!

Oh, yeah, and it comes with a game, Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3, for 800 Microsoft Points on XBLA. Much like the reason we bought Crackdown (it included an invitation to the Halo 3 multiplayer beta, remember?), Capcom hopes to encourage gamers to pick up their newest Arcade offering with the promise to play Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix on June 25.

Apart from Capcom’s smart marketing plan, Voltex’s Frogger 2 will be dropping for 800 MS points, rounding out the sequel theme on XBLA this week.

What title do you guys plan on downloading and will you get Commando 3 today or closer to SSFIITHDR’s (phew!) beta availability?
