Some may wonder why Emerald Weapon is my choice for one of the greatest video game villains of all-time. It might have a little something to do with the fact that this villain was simply one hard bastard to beat. With over a million HP and a 20 minute time limit for the battle, very few people beat Emerald Weapon on the first or even second try. While Emerald Weapon wasn’t the hardest boss of all time, it was certainly in my top 5. The only boss battle that was on the same epic level as Emerald Weapon would have been Murai from Ninja Gaiden Black. Defeating any villain in a game should evoke emotions of accomplishment, and Emerald Weapon certainly accomplished that for me.
If you happened to collect the Underwater Materia in the game, then you don’t have to worry about the time limit, but that’s not as fun. I fought and defeated EW when I first located him back in 1997. I discovered a YouTube video showing the boss being defeated by Tifa:
There’s been some rumor-mongering on the interwebs (when isn’t there?) about the possible release date for Final Fantasy XIII. The article, which has since been pulled, pointed to the now non-PS3 exclusive releasing in Japan next summer and making it out to North American by the end of the year.
It seems likely that that’s the time table for the game as Square Enix recently announced that they’re packing in a demo of the game in the upcoming Bluray Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete next year. So…they have been working on something, it just takes time, patient gamers, it takes time.
A picture taken by the attentive GameTrailers poster, irchief’s Avatar, at Best Buy points to the possibility of some type of release for Final Fantasy VII on “8/16.”
Square Enix just held a conference this weekend and announced little else but Final Fantasy: Advent Children Complete which was given a release date for next year.
Might this be a goof up on Best Buy’s part or is it possible that we will be getting a remake of the original? A port to PSN? Strike this up as strictly rumor and we’ll see what happens when the date nears.
Overclocked Remix decide to offer gamers “Final Fantasy VII: Voices of the Lifestream”. The album features free fan arrangements of FF songs with over 45 tracks from 40 various artists, all based on the official FF VII soundtrack. While fan-made albums are often terrible, this one is certainly worth the free download. In many ways, it’s superior to the official product.
The styles include jazz, new age, techno, rock and classical. In other words, there’s something for everyone on Voices of the Lifestream. If you love music and love Final Fantasy, there’s no reason not to download this! You can download this album at FF7:VotL Torrent (2.32GB).
I’d like to thank Shawn of Gaming Today for discovering this gem.
German developer and publisher Daedalic Entertainment today launched the official web home for upcoming fantasy adventure game The Whispered World. The picturesque website offers details and new looks at the gorgeous 2D point & click tale.
Visitors to www.the-whispered-world.com will find story details, character overviews and a selection of press voices. Screenshots, exclusive making-of artwork and new wallpapers give a taste of the PC adventure game’s gorgeous graphics. The website will be continuously updated with additional content.
Wow, in a turn of events, Yoichi Wada from Square Enix has just announced that FINAL FANTASY XIII is no longer an exclusive title. It will now join the ranks of a Cross-platform release on the PS3 and Xbox 360!
Let the fanboy battles begin. With this annoucement exclusivety is a thing of the past. What’s next Grand Theft Auto 4… WTF!
Anyone who really knows me has probably heard my ramblings about how much I love the original Final Fantasy VII, one of the greatest video games of all-time. I’ve never been fond of the direction Final Fantasy VII sequels have taken us since the classic PS1 title. Fortunately, I recently discovered ‘Avalanche’ which is a 3rd-person action game. You don’t quite get the RPG experience, but it’s a lot of fun. The story basically takes place just after the events of the original FF VII. You play as Tifa who is loaded with all kinds of cool special weapons and powerful attacks. Unfortunately, this isn’t a Square licensed game, but I hope they take a look at this game and learn from it. It amazes me how great “freeware” titles still are. If you’re a big FF fan, don’t miss out on this one.
Few games are dropping this week, but of those, Haze and Penny Arcade Adventures grabbed our attention.
Haze is the the game you should probably stay away from this week — judging by the recent demo on PS3, anyway. Plus, videophiles will be sorely disappointed to know that the game doesn’t run in HD, according to Ripten.com (via Kotaku).
The first episode of Penny Arcade Adventures will be hitting this week and looks like an interesting concept that trades in the comic’s current event strips for an old-timey backdrop and original story. Let us know what you think of the game in the comments.
