Hardware and Software Video Game Sales

Last month’s numbers are something we’ve been looking forward to here at Kezins. The biggest games started hitting stores and it’s a good indicator as to what we’ll likely be seeing in the years to come (read: sequels).

We weren’t aware of the kind of clout the Fable series carried, but now we are wide awake to this fact: people love them some Fable II! Disappointing to see the below-average SOCOM: Confrontation selling out the lovable, make-your-own-game, LittleBigPlanet, but there’s always next month.

‘SIDE’ the production company that brought us Fable 2 says “It was a real pleasure to work on”.

With over 45 actors ranging from the ages of 8-80 to play 200 speaking characters, Fable 2 has nearly 370,000 words recorded which comes to 38 hours of dialogue!  Unlike Oblivion, where certain characters voices were depicted correctly based on looks alone, Fable 2 has dialogue that seems to be a bit more evened out.  By that I mean, speaking to 2 characters in a row will rarely sound the same.  Hope that’s clear…

For Microsoft’s epic RPG, FABLE 2, SIDE cast over 45 actors (aged from 8 to 80) to play almost 200 speaking characters. Four of SIDE’s voice directors ensured that all performances harmonized perfectly with FABLE’S idiosyncratic world and captured the complexities of its inhabitants. The voice recording ran concurrently in two of Side’s studios for over three months, amounting to nearly 370,000 words recorded – that’s 38 hours of dialogue!

“FABLE 2 was a real pleasure to work on. We realised this was going to be something special as soon as we saw the superb script,” said Side Creative Director, Andy Emery. “The widespread critical acclaim for the performances in FABLE 2 show the impact a great script, cast and direction can make”

Peter Molyneux says “The sheer amount of dialogue in FABLE 2 meant this was a massive project. Side rose to this challenge in a professional and efficient way. They have done a great job for us”

Some people were a little upset when we found out that Lionhead decided to not include the Limited Fate Cards with the LCE of Fable II. Fortunately, they have made a .PDF available for download.

While there are some rated “M” games on the market that are certainly bad for kids, Fable 2 would actually be a good game to purchase for kids, particularly young teens.  Some parent groups out there on the web have bashed Fable for it’s adult and sexual content, but it’s actually very mild and could teach kids some valuable lessons.  I’ve been playing the game quite a bit this week and there’s nothing graphic whatsoever with the sex scenes.  They are pretty much like the ones in the first game.  Most of the sexual content in the game should be classified as “implied”.  If you travel around the land having random sex without a condom, you’ll catch an STD just like in real life.  Fable 2 would actually be good for teenagers to play as it teaches some very important things in life like safe sex and consequences for your decisions.

I haven’t been playing as many different games in 2008 as I did last year. In 2007, I made enough money from blogging to pay rent, child support, car insurance, buy clothes and food, and travel extensively. I was also working for the Virginia Tech Police Department in 2007 on the side, so the side full-time job gave me plenty of money to bank. On top of that, I was pulling in the G.I. Bill. Unfortunately my G.I. Bill ran out and I’m still a few semesters away from my BA. 2008 hasn’t been so kind. I haven’t made 1/10 of what I pulled in last year in blogging and I was unemployed for most of this year. I finally landed a full-time job this week (with a modest salary), but the blogging revenue simply isn’t there yet. Last year, I could buy any game or system on a whim, because I had extra cash always floating around. Things just aren’t so fortunate now, so I have to cut back on my gaming. I haven’t been receiving many games to review lately, but it looks like I’ll definitely be receiving Dead Space from Electronic Arts this week. You never know what I’ll end up receiving, but here’s my plans for now:

We all pretty much assumed that their would be prostitution in Fable 2, and some artwork has now been released that confirms it’s certainly true. I’m sure the anti-game people will jump on Fable 2 when we get closer to the release, but it is a rated “M” title, so I have no problem with it. Let’s just hope Fable 2 isn’t a massive letdown like the original Fable was on the Xbox. I wonder if there will be pimp hats in this one as well..
