Velvet Assassin (previous, working title: Sabotage) is an upcoming stealth action video game for Xbox 360 and PC to be released on October 17th, 2008. The game is inspired by a real life World War II secret agent/saboteur Violette Szabo. Players take on the role of Violette Summer as she goes behind enemy lines to thwart the German war machine.

In Velvet Assassin, players assume the role of Violette Summer and head deep behind enemy lines with no support or official backing from the British Government. Violette risks her life fighting to defeat the German war machine one stealth mission at a time. Velvet Assassin combines lush, surreal visuals and a ground-breaking stealth combat system to deliver a gaming experience which is truly the first of its kind.

Thanks Shaun!

One of the cool aspects of Soulcalibur IV is the critical finish moves. Unfortunately, it’s kind of hard figuring out how exactly to use the damn systems. I’ve been playing SC IV for a while now and finally pulled off my first critical finish. It wasn’t as hard as I was making it out to be. Here’s the steps you’ll need to take:

  1. Wait for your opponent’s “soul gauge” to flash red.
  2. Engage them with a strong attack.  If you land a strong attack while your enemy is blocking or execute a “guard impact” when they are attacking you, you have just completed what’s called a “soul crush”.
  3. For a very short moment, your opponent will flash red (their bar will be flashing red and their character will flash red).  Tap the Left Button immediately and if you were quick enough, the fight will be over as you destroy them with a critical finish.  Just make sure you tap it quickly, because there’s not much room for error.
That’s really all there is to critical finishes.  It took me some time to figure that out on my own.  At first, I was trying to tap the LB just when their meter was flashing red and nothing would happen.  Perform 100 critical finishes during your time with SC IV and it’s worth 30 Gamerscore.

Not many exciting games dropping this week, but shooter fans should be happy. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars will satisfy console gamers waiting for the PC shooter that launched to favorable reviews.

Aside from the obvious choice this week is Mass Effect (with a smoother framerate and altered HUD from the Xbox 360 version) and Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Colonies Edition which is, remember, incompatible with the first edition of the game on Xbox 360. Aww.

Here’s the latest console video for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.  ETQW is a first-person shooter follow-up to Wolfenstein: Enemy Terrritory.  The primary new features of this game are the ability to pilot aircraft, addition of massive maps, and asymmetric teams.    The title is already on the shelves for PC and Mac formats, but will not be on shelves for the Xbox 360 and Sony PS3 until May 28, 2008.  We’ve seen a lot of great games hit the consoles this year and this will certainly be a welcomed one.  For more information on the title, visit enemyterritory.com.

Life is complicated. I killed people, smuggled people, sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different.
–Niko Bellic, Grand Theft Auto IV

Many of you playing GTA IV, are aware of the current missions and only some of Niko Bellic’s past. We feel it’s important to decipher the criminal mind behind Niko Bellic all before he arrived to America!

Name: Niko Bellic
Age: 30 years old
Weight: 187
Eyes: Brown
Born: Croatia

Notable Characteristics: Scar over his left eye, limps off his left leg, European accent

Background: Niko grew up in war-torn Serbia. He is an illegal immigrant hailing from the Balkans who arrived in Liberty City by way of the merchant navy ship Platypus. Niko’s father, Karmalaf Bellic, bullied and made life difficult for Niko. Milica Bellic, his mother, felt sad that her son had to grow up in such a harsh environment. Niko also fought in the Bosnian War as a teenager for the Serbian Army. He witnessed and possibly committed numerous atrocities which deeply affected him and gave him a cynical view on life. A defining moment in the war for Niko was when his army unit of fifteen young men (including him) were ambushed by the enemy. Niko barely escaped with his life, but most of his friends were killed - he later discovered that two others also survived. Realizing that one of them tipped the enemy off to their location, Niko vowed to track down the culprit, not solely on revenge, but because he needed closure.

When the war ended, work was hard to come by in the country. His cousin, Roman Bellic, moved to America to start a new life in Liberty City. Niko, knowing only violence most of his life, turned to the criminal underworld for the next ten years while at the same time searching for the two men who survived the ambush. At some point during this interval, he was arrested and imprisoned for Drug Smuggling. Sometime after he was released, Niko joined a human trafficking ring run by Rodislav Bulgarin. Niko eventually discovered that Florian Cravic, another survivor of the ambush, was living in Liberty City.

When a boat sank during one smuggling run, Niko managed to swim to safety, but everything else was lost. Bulgarin believed Niko sunk the boat and escaped with the money onboard. Niko denied this, but Bulgarin’s decision was final and he was too powerful a figure to fight back against. Niko quickly joined the crew of the Liberty City bound cargo ship Platypus and fled Bulgarin. Roman had been asking Niko to come to Liberty City to share a new life of money and women, which Niko wanted, but he mainly wanted to find Cravic and escape Bulgarin’s wrath.

Upon arriving in Liberty City, Niko realizes that Roman’s tales of success were lies: he lives in a tiny apartment, runs a small taxi depot and owes gambling debts to several criminals. Niko ends up working for Roman, protecting his cousin from the loan sharks that keep harrassing him. Roman soon loans Niko’s services to friends and enemies alike, which angers Niko although he needs the money, and sets in motion the events of the game.

Niko’s view of American culture is one of confusion and mild disgust. The rampant materialism annoys him and he has trouble relating to Roman’s fascination with the country. Plus, after working for so many criminals, he feels that everyone in Liberty City is a crook.

Niko is voiced by Michael Hollick.

“Lockout” was perhaps my favorite Halo 2 map and now we have the remake “Blackout” for Halo 3. The debate this week will certainly be deciding which map is better. I honestly wish I could say the new map was better, but I still prefer Halo 2’s version. I feel like the textures were completely overdone on the new map and the map is just missing some of the old magic. I had the chance to play a few games on it today and it simply didn’t feel as exciting as the old map did. On the old map, it was easier to create choke points to trap the enemy team, but it just feels a little too spacious this time around. Obviously “Blackout” will be the map that sells the new DLC pack, but I’m just not feeling it. It’s still a good map, but I honestly expected more.

Which map do you prefer?

Halo 2’s Lockout or Halo 3’s Blackout…

I’ve owned a lot of gaming systems in my time. Some were memorable and others were forgettable . For some reason, Action Max is a system that I remember fondly. It was real cheesy, the games were full of “B” acting action, but it was fun for some reason. There was really no way to win any of the games, however. With each tape, you would simply score points for each enemy you were able to hit with the light gun. During the 3rd generation, I owned a NES, SEGA Master System and Action Max console.

HydroSub 2021 was probably my favorite game on the Action Max. VHS games were short lived, but certainly deserve a little remembrance. I actually still have a functioning Action Max boxed away in the basement, but no longer own a functional VHS player.
