Inspired by Spike’s 2008 Video Game Awards, we decided to throw our own opinions into the dark hole we like to call “the internets”.  Punches were thrown, wrestling moves we learned playing TNA iMpact! were used and feelings were hurt, but the three of us were able to come up with our own 2008 award list.  These are the best video games of 2008 according to Will “Kezins” Snizek, Juan “Mr. Juandrful” Perez and Carlos “For Sure” Macias.  Feel free to drop your own opinions in the comments below.

Video Game of the Year

Grand Theft Auto IV

“Game of the Year” was a tough choice and we certainly didn’t all agree on the pick, but GTA IV came out as the winner.  It certainly wasn’t a clear winner though.  The game was released on the Xbox 360 and Sony PS3 initially and several months later for the PC platform on December 2, 2008.  Grand Theft Auto IV received high praise from nearly every game review site and magazine on the planet and quickly became one of the highest rated games of all-time.  Once the dust settled, GTA IV has lost some of its initial steam, but will certainly be considered one of the best games of its time.  The game sold more than 3.6 million copies on the first day of availability.   On 13 May 2008, Grand Theft Auto IV broke the Guinness World Records for “Highest grossing video game in 24 hours” and “Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours”.  Niko Bellic was one of the most interesting characters in any video game I have ever played and we hope they bring back his character in the future.

To add, GTA IV will be getting it’s 2nd wind with the much anticipated DownLoadableContent (DLC).  Due out on February 17th of 2009, the DLC will be titled “Lost and Damned“.  Maybe GTA IV’s DLC will make our Video Game Awards next year under the category “Best DLC” of course.

Although the animation system is in an early stage, the kind creators at Wolfire have posted a new video on their blog.  The game they are working on titled Overgrowth certainly looks interesting so far.  Overgrowth is a 3d action-adventure game coming to Mac, Windows and Linux

While working on the initial procedural movement animation, I took breaks every now and then to record videos of each stage. I started out just blocking out the movement controls and then added layers of complexity. The final animation in Overgrowth is going to look much better than the last scene in this video!

Dead Space currently has my vote for “video game of the year”.  The latest demo for the game titled “The Dismemberment Demo” will land on PSN and XBL tomorrow.  The official EA blog has some interesting news concerning the demo HERE.  If you haven’t played Dead Space yet, I’m not really sure what’s wrong with you.  It’s never too late to get in on the action though…
