Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?
5th Grader from Blitz Arcade gives all Xbox 360 gamers a chance to answer that question. I’ve certainly spent $15 in wiser ways, but the XBLA title isn’t the worst purchase I ever made. For whatever reason, trivia games almost always fall flat on their face when they make their way to consoles.
Challenge
I expected a real challenge with this game, but I made my way to the million dollar prize two times in a dozen attempts. Considering 5th grade was twenty years ago for me, it should have been a lot tougher. Unlike the television show, all questions other than the final one are either multiple choice or true-false. It’s fairly easy to eliminate an obvious wrong answer or two with each question. The questions are not very balanced and the students who help you out with cheats seem to give wrong answers often…
Multiplayer
I expected multiplayer to be a big aspect of this title, but it’s rather lame. There’s only one multiplayer mode to choose from and it’s certainly not a good one. Each player basically plays their own game of 5th Grader and whoever finishes with the most money wins.
Graphics & Sound
Being a trivia game, graphics really aren’t all that important, but they could have tried a little harder. Jeff Foxworthy seems like he was rendered a bit off, but I’m not really concerned about it. The sound with this game is an epic failure. I can’t get the silly theme song out of my head either.
Presentation
The game presentation isn’t too bad. You can tell they put some thought into the game. It’s simply unfortunate that the game failed in just about every other category.
In The End…
This is basically one of those XBLA moments where I wish I could go back in time and not waste 15 bucks, but life screws you sometimes and we just have to deal with it. This game falls short in most areas and there are certainly better trivia game options on XBLA and PSN. The game did provide a couple hours of entertainment, but grew stale quickly. I’d suggest skipping this and find another game to fill your trivia needs. If you are a fan of the television series, you’ll probably hate the game. The only reason I have played this game more than once is so I don’t feel like a moron for purchasing it in the first place. If the game were $5, I wouldn’t feel so bad.
