The Witcher represents the pinnacle of storytelling in role-playing games, shattering the line between good and evil with a world where moral ambiguity reigns. In a beautiful, rich game universe, the player takes on the role of renowned monster slayer, Geralt of Rivia, in an epic, action-packed narrative in which his decisions have a major impact on how the story plays out. The Witcher emphasizes story and character development in a vibrant world, while incorporating tactically-deep real-time combat like no game before it.

Not sure if I’d play through an RPG with just a mouse, but that’s a real cool option for them to have. I suppose I prefer the keyboard when it comes to PC games. From the sounds of it, I should probably pick this up…

Well, I tried reviewing it from a point-and-click point of view since everyone who plays PC RPG games uses a mouse+keyboard.

yeah that was a good idea I think
I’ve never actually played a game in that manner myself.. not an RPG anyway.

Nice review, although your comments on the controls were a bit weird. I take it you’ve never actually played PC RPGs, or just very, very, few of them?
You see, mouse-driven RPGs are not a rarity in PC gaming, they’re the standard. Almost every PC RPG is entirely mouse-driven, aside from a couple more recent games (such as Oblivion, The Witcher and World of Warcraft). Every single oldschool PC RPG is 100% mouse-driven (e.g.: Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Diablo, Titan Quest, Dungeon Siege).
While being allowed to choose between the two (mouse and mouse + keyboard) is slightly unusual, that’s not entirely uncommon either. Besides, being able to alter controls and utilize alternative controllers (gamepads, joysticks, mouse-only, mouse + keyboard) has been pretty standard in PC gaming for well over a decade now.

The game really needs a walk mode in the over the shoulder camera view.
You can only walk in overhead views and it’s a little disconcerting running around the taverns and rooms but to get the fully into the game the OTC view is the most absorbing. It’s fairly easy to switch modes but cant understand why they just didn’t put a walk mode on all camera views. Other than that, this is great game and has kept me fully engrossed for a week now and I’m not finished yet. The game choices leave you agonizing over which way to go, do I pick Trish or Shani? Love the game.
