Chicago Game Store Burglars Ask Cops For Ride Home… What Are Your Thoughts On ‘Mad World’ Coming to the Wii?
Aug 19

If you have followed my writing over the past few years, you wouldn’t be surprised to find out that I’m not the biggest Nintendo Wii fan on the planet. When I hear people talking about how it’s the greatest console ever, I just find it extremely difficult to understand how they could possibly think this. Nintendo fanboys sometimes remind me of women with battered person syndrome. The Wii is basically like a busted crack head who beats his wife (the Nintendo Wii fanboy) yet she still loves him for some reason. It simply does not make the least bit of sense. Don’t take my post too personal. I still enjoy certain aspects of the Wii. I just find that it’s a highly flawed system that receives far more kudos than it should have.

10. The length of time it takes for the average gamer to get their hands on a Wii is still shocking. Although it’s much easier now, Nintendo still can’t seem to keep up with demand.

09. Nintendo whores out Mario so often it’s hard to even keep up with how many games he’s in. At the same time, some of the greatest Nintendo games of all-time have yet to re-appear. Where’s the new Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out or the new Pilot Wings?

08. Lack of decent online features combined with a laughable internal HD and SD slot.

07. There are more poorly made games on the Wii than any major system I can think of in the past two generations. I’d estimate that at least 80% of the current Wii games are total rubbish. Games like Ninjabread Man certainly don’t help the system in any way.

06. It’s more or less a Game Cube with a few extras and a sensor bar.

05. The Virtual Console has a long list of truly awesome games, but there’s several problems with the VC. The first problem is that there’s no room to actually download all the games you love. I currently have 92 games downloaded from Microsoft Xbox LIVE. Even though the Virtual Console has better games, I have only bothered downloading 5 of them. The other problem is that VC games don’t support online multiplayer. Without that support, I’d sooner find the old games at a garage sale for a quarter and warm up the old NES.

04. Wii Friend Codes are probably the most retarded thing they came up with. With all the programmers that work for Nintendo, I find it hard to believe that this was the best thing they came up with when it comes to online multiplayer. I can go back as far as the Sony PS2 and SEGA Dreamcast and find better online functionality.

03. Just when we thought Nintendo was improving their third-party relations, we discover at E3 that they kept all developers and publishers in the dark when it came to Wii MotionPlus. Instead of getting some cool games using this technology in the near future, we probably will not see any decent Wii MotionPlus titles until late 2009.

02. With all the crazy peripherals being released by Nintendo, they have yet to release a worthwhile controller for classic style gameplay. I also find that the Wii-mote is a bit small for people with big hands. I feel as if mass appeal continues for Nintendo, they have no plans to fix the little things.

01. 2001 called and said they want their graphics back.

    10. I’m sure you know all the details about putting the hardware together…I’m sure the other consoles would have the same problem if anyone was buying them.

    9. Punch-out and Pilot Wings have never out sold Mario. And the games with Mario in them are still quality games, this is not a reason.

    8. Online works well for me, maybe your wi-fi connection sucks.

    7. There are more games on the Wii than the other two consoles. A ton of games on the other consoles look good…but they’re still bad. I’ve played some games on the PS3 where I wasn’t even trying (or paying attention) to start kicking ass. The fact is, the Wii has a larger demographic than the other two consoles, and thus have to make games that appeal to the 7 year olds and the 25+ (The Conduit, Madworld, Fatal Frame, RE:4, Manhunt 2)

    6. The same way the 360 is an Xbox with better graphics, right?

    5. You have a computer right…you realize you can store games on an SD card right? It would be the same as putting in and out cartridges. Maybe instead of complaining about problems, you can start thinking for yourself.

    4. Friend codes do what they are suppose to do perfectly. They are a fail safe that Nintendo doesn’t get sued by idiots. Remember when Microsoft got sued because some one was being stalked through X-Box live?

    3. Ubi-soft thinks differently. They are ecstatic about the Wii Motion plus and Red Steel 2. And let’s not forget all the third party companies making some pretty kickass exclusives for the Wii. Sonic and the Black Knight, The Conduit, Mad World…

    2. What? You mean…the Gamecube controller…or the classic controller? It would be kinda hard for a classic style controller that uses the motion sensing in both the wii mote and nunchuck. I think you’re really trying hard now to think of reasons to not like the Wii.

    1. Isn’t this the same as reason number 6? Either way, we all know good graphics = good gameplay.

    I think you failed….

  2. 2. Riley Says:

WTF?!?! my super smash bros brawl never lags!
and who gives a damn about graphics really?!?!

  3. 3. Ken Says:

I agree with the above poster.

Thing is, you only need ONE reason.

    1. I don’t like Wii.

And, if you have that reason, don’t buy it.

The above poster noted the biggest reason why I think most gamers don’t like a lot of the games in Wii, and that is because of the demographics of the Wii… it is not geared mainly to the pure gamer… but also geared for the whole family of kids, moms/dads/even grandparents.

Not everyone likes to play GEARS OF WAR ETC … some like to bowl some like to do Ninjabread etc… Wii has taken the time to include everyone.

Not just the pocket protector types and the gamer enthusiast. And, those groups have two other formats to use (xbox and PS)

  4. 4. I agree with Lol Says:

Oh SNAP!!! Will Snizek, you got SERVED by Lol!!!

  5. 5. willi Says:

will snizek just got sent back to school.

  6. 6. Will Snizek Says:

    I did?

  7. 7. Juan Perez Says:

I think Will makes great points. Talking to a gamer who appreciates their graphics and is a hardcore FPS, the Wii is that little nerdy guy in the crowd. Sure, he has cool gadgets and is clean cut, but you wouldn’t want to go drinking with the man!

  8. 8. Will Snizek Says:

I do make good points (lol). I told people not to take it personal. And just because I have some negative thoughts on the Wii doesn’t mean I don’t have my complaints for the 360 and PS3.

The thing is, I do like my Wii sometimes and I feel like the system had more potential than Nintendo is willing to pump out of it. The main thing is I can just never take the Wii too seriously. It’s not a system designed with gamers in mind. It’s a system with everyone in mind and I think people are ignoring that.

  9. 9. Juan Perez Says:

How can you have complaints about the PS3, it’s the best system out :)

  10. 10. bokers Says:

haha… i have a wii, but sadly I have to agree with you. of course, this comes from a guy who got the xbox 360 1st… but still!

i have to admit, the games on the wii are lacking. now, there are a good number of decent titles, but the graphics just suck. in response to the first poster’s #6: you might think the 360 is just the previous generation plus better graphics… but the wii doesn’t even boast that. frankly, i don’t think it would have hurt nintendo to up the graphics on the thing. more expensive… okay. but this way, you can even draw some hard-core gamers in w/ some more enticing titles. overall, the wii is a novel idea. it just has a lot of area to improve.. and to be the top console at this point really shows that nintendo could possibly be headed in the right direction.
btw, u can’t really blame nintendo on the wii-motion plus thing…. e3 is the best place to announce these kinda things, though it would have been nice to see some titles late this year (or even early next year) to debut the hardware :D

  11. 11. Will Snizek Says:

@bokers: I think they could have upped the price a bit on a better system and would still have made tons of money. The thing with the graphics is it’s just simply outdated. Tons of people now have widescreen HD-TVs, etc and it’s just boneheaded to create a device that’s more or less designed for old televisions. It never really made sense to me.

  12. 12. Razien Says:

You got some points. Let’s go:

    10. Yes, it’s shocking, but that seems to be more of a problem to the “casual” gamer, wich don’t really care to have to wait some months to get a Wii. That’s why it still sells like hotcakes. And that’s why Nintendo has the biggest monthly console production ever.

    09. Yeah, they overuse Mario. But the games are always great, and sell. Mario Kart, Strikers, Sluggers… I really can’t complain about them not being fun. And the games are coming: the console isn’t even 2 years old and we already got Samsh Bros, Metroid, Zelda and Mario, at least. Pikmin is coming, probably another Zelda, and Punch Out is a heavy rumour. There are just too many great franchises, and Nintendo has to stabilish a priority.

    08. Storage sucks, big time. Gamers (and even non gamers) are stopping buying stuff, and Nintendo is coming up with a solution. They take longer, we buy less, and they lose.

    07. The PS2 had A LOT of shitty games, just as much as the Wii. The difference is that it was getting great third party support too. That’s hurting the Wii, but wil just change when 3rd parties realise the potential for good software. Some already are, some will take a long time or maybe never.

    06. The gamecube rocked. Wind Waker, BG&E, RE4, Killer7… It got many awesome games. Having a little better system with awesome controls is amazing. Have you played Metroid Prime 3? Those controls can change someone’s perspective about controllers and immersiveness.

    05. VC is not about playing old games with new features, it’s about playing old games the way they were supposed to be. All in one place. But yeah, some should get new features, the games lately have been of dubious quality, and the storage sucks, again.

    04. Wii Friend Codes suck most of time, but I didn’t have any problem with it on Mario Kart Wii. People complain and bitch about it, but you just have to add it once. Of course, they should be integrated with the system’s Friend Code, but it doesn’t kill the game.

    03. They just got the tech, and they announced the peripheral a lot before the launch, just to get developers almost head-to-head with them. If it’s not coming out now, it’s because they don’t have anything ready yet. Their relationship isn’t good, but this is the only thing I think they did right this year.

    02. Classic Controller. It’s pretty good, except for the small d-pad. Still a lot better than 360’s d-pad, anyway.

    01. The Wii is capable of 2004’s graphics. Just look at Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3. The problem, again, is with lazy developers. Counduit just shows that it is capable of doing Half Life 2’s (PC version) graphics. That’s more than fine to me. Just look, the 360 is already outdated (Crysis, anyone? Rage?) and nobody complains about it.

  13. 13. Orlando Says:

Ok, hardcore gamers, Wii does not have hardcore games…..oh wait, Super Smash Bros. , Super Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario, Madden, Metroid Prime, MLB Power Pros, No More Heroes, Boom Blox, Ghost Squad, Excite Truck, MarioKart….. What’s hardcore anyway?? A person that only plays 1st person shooters?? Then the Wii does not cater to hardcore gamers (even though it has 1st person shooters too)…Mature games? The only reason Nintendo doesn’t get as many mature games as the other consoles is the general mindset everybody always have with every console Nintendo makes. Open your mind a little, nobody will laugh at you if you play a game rated E for Everyone as long as that game is G O O D. Plus I dare anyone tell me Super Mario World 2 is for kids….

  14. 14. Razien Says:

The sad thing isn’t the problems it has, tough; it’s having no perspective that those issues are going to be fixed with care. As you said, it looks like Nintendo doesn’t wnat to fix any of these problems, unless they really hurt their mass market share (even the storage problem, that does hurt, isn’t being properly adressed, or else we would have already gotten a storage solution).

I agree about the power, but they couldn’t predict that they would be so sucessful, so they had to do a system that was cheap not only to produce, but to develop for (just being HD ups production costs a lot), so they could keep making games for their platform even if it sold less than the gamecube. And, by the support the Wii got until now, you can see that they would be supporting the console alone if it didn’t sell that great.

  15. 15. Will Snizek Says:

I actually do play some games rated E for Everyone. This wasn’t really a debate about what’s hardcore and what isn’t. That debate never goes anywhere anyway.

Super Mario 2 is a great game. I downloaded the SMB 2: The Lost Levels and is probably the thing I play the most on my Wii. My gripe has nothing to do with how many “M” games are on the console.

I do feel like a majority of games released for the Wii are total crap. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t some good games. I certainly see positive and negative aspects to their game lineup. I’m also not a PS3 or 360 fanboy. I have issued with those systems as well. I just have trouble understanding how so many people think the Wii is the greatest thing ever…

  16. 16. Razien Says:

Will… The first time I played with my whole family and almost 10 friends, all laughing about Miis, or getting lost with the B button on bowling, or just having pure fun on tennis, I got it. I saw that this was different. Before, I used to play my games alone, having my own private world; now, I can share it with my family and all of my friends, not just the gamers. Testing wich game each one likes the most, and having people respecting my favorite hobby is an amazing sensation. I can enjoy it in a broader way now, keeping my personal experiences when I want and sharing the joy of gaming with everyone when possible.

Well, that’s my experience. That, besides the first time I played Metroid Prime 3, with those unbelievable controls, or when Zelda felt just… Right. But that’s another story, and just shows that gamers from the Atari times can still be surprised by gaming.

  17. 17. Falco1029 Says:

OMG You’re so cool, having a differing opinion. I bet your mommy says the fact that you think differently makes you extra special.

Seriously, everyone’s heard these complaints before, you’re way behind. Not liking the wii doesn’t make you cool

  18. 18. Ben Says:

I going to tell, he used the “r” word.

  19. 19. mscene Says:

The post is on point, I’m not saying the Wii is bad it is just not that good. Above someone tried saying PS3s and 360s are also Gamecubes with better graphics. The fact is I am sure you can get any Wii game out running on a Gamecube with little to no change in actual gameplay or graphics, were as there is no way in hell any last generation system could ever play some of the games on the PS3 and 360.

Now I don’t fault Nintendo for that, they didn’t know their system would sell so well and since the Gamecube didn’t, they didn’t want to risk spending the money on R&D so now we unfortunately have a mediocre system.

What I do blame them for is the other points that were listed, the ones they could fix or should of had some insight to avoid begin with. Like having such poor online is inexcusable, XBox Live has been around for years, they could have put some time in making the system decent, Wii codes and Friend codes and awful peer to peer is utter nonsense.

As awful as only 10 GB would have been they could at least have given that much to storage, that is pennies on the dollar when it was launched. Besides they bumped up the retail price of the Wii from $199 to $249 just because they figured witth the PS3 at $600 people would blindly pay $250 and say it’s cheap. And like well train dogs people did so Nintendo was right. But adding $50 they could at leas have added some more storage.
The 360 had an excuse they were first, and even they had a 20GB option, but to release a system with only 512 MB of storage is ridiculous in this day and age.

Without going into all on the list, the big thing is the games and gameplay as mentioned why are they so lack with the games. They have a lot of franchises that they could give us that they don’t, I would love a new Pilot Wings, but there is also Nintendo’s habit of one game per franchise per system, if the pattern holds you won’t see another Mario or Smash Bros. until you pay Nintendo more money for another system. PS3 and 360 just keep making new versions of their games until a new console comes out, God of War 3 was planned for the PS2, so if Nintendo was trying and couldn’t do it I would understand but they go out of there way not to make more than one per system, what the hell kind of rip off is that? I know a lot of you Wii fans would love a new Mario or Smash every 2 or 3 years, but every 5 or 6, come’on. And lastly yes the Wiimote is fun, but as stated give me a decent controller so I can play games beyond the Wiimote type.

  20. 20. Aaron Says:

    RE: Point number 10

    http://r.stumpnet.net/?26

As you can see, the Wii’s worldwide shipments eclipse even the record-breaking PS2 worldwide shipments. By a long-shot.

When criticizing Nintendo for failing to get inventory out there, consider that you’re basically saying “Nintendo is running laps around their competition… BUT THEY COULD BE RUNNING FASTER!” Yeah, maybe, but is that really the most notable thing about Wii shipments?

  21. 21. Will Snizek Says:

you’re missing the point. Sales figures don’t necessarily make something great. The Ford Pinto broke all kinds of sales records for several years, but it was a piece of crap.

It’s BS to say they are running laps around the competition and that’s why they can’t get enough on the shelves. They have had how long to prepare? This has plagued Nintendo systems for many years. It was like this with the NES , SNES and almost like it with the Game Cube in the beginning. Considering it’s a pattern with Nintendo, I have to wonder if it’s part of their marketing strategy.

And I’m not totally against the Wii. I do like mine from time to time, but I think they really need to pay a little more attention to the gamers who are still going to be using the system 5 years from now, not just the mass consumers who are going to be selling theirs for 50 bucks at a garage sale 5 years from now.

  22. 22. Ariel Otero Says:

well i have nothing against the wii and i love it!!!!!!!…… my desk kept moving a lot so i find that if i put my wii underneath one of the legs i find it works amazingly at stabalizing my desk so im going to list ten ways the wii works great….

    10. coaster- i dont like those rings on the tables when i drink my cold beverage so i find the wii takes care of that problem
9.step- i find the wii is great for that extra step to reach my better consoles
8.night light-what can i say im scared of the dark
7.meet girls- i find that it hasn’t worked in the last few days probably because i approach them by saying ” you wanna see something waggle”
6.a hat- the wii is pretty enough for a hat
    5. practice- i find i can practice my martial arts high kicking with out looking like a retard by just holding the wii-mote
4.figuring out the presidential race- i am betting that which ever president takes a picture with the wii he will automatically win the presidency
3.pooper scooper- though its not good to pick it up it does proves it perfect design when transporting the dookie
    2. visiting this site- when im not looking for porn the wii’s browsers lets me look at this site…then back to porn!!
1.motivation- when i look at the wii and its beutiful white coat of paint it helps to motivate me …because i want my teeth to be as white as it

  23. 23. Will Snizek Says:

@Ariel: nice list. best top ten list i have read in a while. i guess we don’t post enough pron on the site, but Juan has been known to post near pron from time to time. My wife reads the site all the time, so I have to try and avoid any imperial entanglements.

  24. 24. Alienange Says:

I always knew there was something about the wii that bothered me. Your list has definitely shed some light on why my wii is just sitting there next to my tv while my ps3 is being used daily. I own and love Mario Galaxy, but when I think of playing it, I often feel hesitant to start up the wii. I feel more compelled to play my ps3 games because I know more great games are coming out that need playing. Mario Galaxy will always be there. I don’t have to rush playing it because very few good games are coming out (if any) for the wii.
@Lol - number 8. Will said “Lack of decent online features” … “features.” Buy a PS3 or 360 and you’ll know what he means by “feature.” Epic fail.

  25. 25. Wii-Spiele Says:

The article is absurd and proves that the autor has not the slighest idea of video games, or console hardware or the console market at whole.

But in the end. An autor who publish such a bunch generalizations and lies has been paid good … by Microsoft or Sony. If he is very good by MS and Sony. :)

  26. 26. some guy Says:

Will said, “It’s not a system designed with gamers in mind. It’s a system with everyone in mind and I think people are ignoring that.”

The developers and publishers certainly aren’t ignoring that it’s a system with everyone in mind. A system that appeals to more people is likely to produce better profit margins. That’s why the Playstation had so many more games than the Nintendo 64–Compact Discs provided better profit margins over cartridges. That’s why the Wii is attracting so many games.

There is a perception that most of the games out for Wii are crap. If you take a look at the industry that is in place to review games you might notice that it is comprised almost entirely of the hardcore gamer market. The Wii has a lot of games that are not meant for those people. It’s little wonder that they don’t like those games.

I believe that a lot of the supposedly crap games for the Wii are actively being enjoyed by the market they were intended for. That is not to say that there isn’t some truly crappy games on the Wii, but I don’t believe the ratio of poorly designed and badly executed games is any higher for the Wii than for any other system.

Anyway, hardware evangelism is retarded. People should start playing the games they enjoy and leave other people the hell alone.

  27. 27. Logan Says:

Uhh… Why not bitch about how the PS2 still has support, causing the Wii to get more lazy ports.

  28. 28. Alienange Says:

@some guy - if hardware evanglism is retarded then why’d you do it?

    Anybody still playing wiifit?
I’m glad I didn’t fall for that one. Especially after Nintendo laughed in the face of those who did. Saying they “sold us a bunch of bathroom scales.” That would be number 11 on your list Will.

  29. 29. some guy Says:

    @Alienange - I didn’t. Go back and read again.

  30. 30. M E W Says:

Nintendo Wii’s graphics is nothing when compared to Xbox360 and PS3 BUT when it comes to QUALITY GAMES and INNOVATION, PS3 & Xbox 360 is nothing compared to Wii..

AND its reality that most of us today are looking forward to cool games and innovative gameplay rather than just graphics and hardcore games.. Come on guys, Most kids will rather play Super Mario Galaxy because it is gamers- of-all-ages friendly rather than to play Gears or War or God of War that is pure harcore..

and whatever you said, Wii is more popular and chart topper than the other 2.. Same goes to DS and PSP.. =D

  31. 31. Alienange Says:

@ some guy - You’re right. It was software evangelism.

I for one agree with #7. Too many poorly made games for the Wii. Will gave a generous 80% as being rubbish. Players from “the market they were intended for” probably only play 10% of those rubbish games. Then they think to themselves, crap games like these are the reason I wasn’t a gamer in the first place. Sadly, the Wii is a flash in the pan. The real gamers out there buy 360 or PS3 and fuel the market as they have for decades. Is there a gamer out there that prefers Madden 08 on the Wii over the 360 or PS3 versions?

  32. 32. jwebb Says:

To be fair to the author (hope the flame retardant suit is holding up!), he did state here that he does not HATE the Wii & finds some things cool.

But as to it’s “red headed stepchild” rep among the “hardcore”….I don’t think I’ve seen such a “lesser product” perform as well as Wii in sales terms. I’m sure all the Wii hate is causing tears over @ Nintendo. Tears wiped away by $100 bills (or the Yen equivalent)

Saw an aritcle this week mentioning a recent NPD study. They found that the largest number of Wii buyers are….wait for it…young males. You know…the “hardcore” demographic. Interesting. But it also has a much higher female demo as well.

ANd as to the future Wii lineup, we all know what Nintendo DID NOT show up with @ E3. OTOH, the most exciting titles coming for Wii announced @ or after E3 seem to all be 3rd party (CONDUIT, MADWORLD, DEADLY CREATURES, DEAD RISING, etc) and all could be considered “hardcore”. Hell, CONDUIT will be a FPS w/ online multiplayer & VOICE CHAT (via WiiSpeak). Plus, we now know GH:World Tour for Wii will have EVERY feature it’s HD bretheren possess - incl DLC.

It’s true that Wii has suffered some major shovelware since launch. BUt it seems those days are coming to a close. Several multiplatform titles either out now or coming (Madden 09, Force Unleashed are 2 that come to mind) are not ports, but ground-up builds specifically for Wii.

And I do think the comment made earlier as to the quality of games/reviews of games for Wii are skewed a bit is true. Wii has more games for “everyone” - and many of those are not what appeal to the typical gamer, but do appeal to a mass market. If you were a game consloe company, wouldnt YOU want to appeal to the largest market possible?

It comes down to this….if you detest Wii & it’s games, then no one is forcing you to buy them. Just because Wii is the far & away champ in console sales this gen, doesn’t mean that the other 2 are failing at all. The influx of “casuals/soccer moms/etc” into the gaming industry is a GOOD thing. Gaming is bigger than ever & one must respect the Wii effect for holding a big chuck ofthe credit. Even a dead last console, sales wise, is still selling better than pretty much any system before it.

Don’t worry “hardcore gamers”…your world is just fine. Wii isn’t killing gaming. Just making gaming much bigger. That benefits everyone.

Lastly (sorry for the rambling post), but to answer the Wii Fit question: Yes, I & the wife have fired up Fit nearly every day since getting it on release day. And I’ve lost close to 10ibs in the process. Just don’t consider Fit a “game”, because it really isn’t. But stick with it & it does work.

  33. 33. jwebb Says:

Forgot to add, though..regarding the #1 reason: “2001 called & wants ity’s graphics back”. Um….I’d venture to say that Super Mario Galaxy is at least a bit better than ‘01 level graphics, sir.

  34. 34. Ady Says:

Top Ten Reasons Why Your Article is Unsubstantiated Nonsense:

    10. This is actually not as big a deal as it has been in the past at all. You’re deliberately making the issue out to be worse than it actually is for the sake of appearing to have an argument. A trend that runs throughout your entire entry. Anyway…

    9. Oh please. Must you haters persist with this feeble argument? Firstly, Mario is a Nintendo mascot; Sony and MS would kill to have a mascot as enduring and well established as Mario synonymous with their consoles. Also, all the “official” Mario games are big hitters so this criticism is really quite petty and inconsequential.

    8. Yaaaaaaawn…

    7. There is a lot of dross on the Wii; just like there was on the PS2 and PS1. You’re deliberately making the issue out to be worse than it actually is for the sake of appearing to have an argument.

    6. The 360 is just an Xbox with slightly higher screen resolution. The PS3 is just a more bloated version of the PS2 with a media format nobody cares about. See what I did there?

    5. Admittedly, the space issue is a very big problem but the SD card system, whilst not perfect is a reasonable workaround until Nintendo comes up with an alternative solution.

    4. Again, the friend code system could be a lot less clunky (it sometimes feels as though it were designed to put you off trying to play online) but trying to strike a balance between safety and usability is very difficult in this sue-happy society. All this considered, do you have any better ideas?

    3. Now this is priceless; so Nintendo should’ve announced WM+ to 3rd party companies ::before:: they’d completed it!? This you posit as a compelling argument against Nintendo? If you scrape that barrel any more, you’ll make a hole in it.

    2. The classic controller is good enough for me - and most users it would seem. That you personally don’t like it hardly counts against Nintendo as a major failing. Also, you must have hands the size of a gorilla if you have trouble operating the Wii remote. I must also assume you never use remotes for any of your other electronic devices.

    1. As a “next-gen” console, the Wii is at least as powerful as the technically strongest machine of the last gen. That developers are deliberately choosing not to put any effort into making Wii games look any better than PS2 efforts is not Nintendo’s fault. I suppose you think it should somehow force 3rd parties to make better looking games, hmm?

As expected, this article is just another flaccid attempt by its author to try and sound controversial by trotting out the same old drivel that’s been trotted out many times before. You’re not saying anything new, inspiring or worthwhile and the only people liable to take you seriously are others like you.

If you really dislike the console so much, then why devote so much time writing about it? Don’t you have something better to do, like play some brown war-themed FPS in HD or something?

  35. 35. Will Snizek Says:

People have mentioned graphics don’t make a game and that’s true, but I think systems need to at least keep up with modern televisions.

I also do not dislike the system SO much like some have mentioned. I think if more Wii fans would complain from time to time, perhaps Nintendo would have their hand forced in the future. It’s also not like I am a 360 or PS3 fanboy. They have problems too. I have positive things to say about the Wii as well.

  36. 36. Will Snizek Says:

I’m not saying the Wii is terrible. I’m just saying it’s not the greatest thing since sliced bread like some…

  37. 37. Chooch Says:

Why would not being able to get a Wii have anything to do with it not being the greatest thing ever? I don’t understand. And the reason the graphics aren’t good is because developers are being lazy. Yes the Wii is definitely underpowered compared to Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, but you’re being a little harsh, and you used the argument twice. Nintendo has shown that the graphics can be great with Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy. Also, the Conduit and Call of Duty: World at War is looking very nice along with De Blob which has an awesome graphical style. I may not agree with some arguments, but I definitely see where you are coming from with this. I JUST REALIZED! SCREW YOU WITH #6!!! YOU CAN USE THAT ARGUMENT FOR EVERY CONSOLE! I would have to say though that number 8 I definitely agree with.

  38. 38. Will Snizek Says:

you can’t use #6 with every console honestly. There are things that can be done with the 360 and PS3 that you couldn’t even come close to with the original Xbox or PS2.

  39. 39. kcb79 Says:

I have a PSWii60… my only hang-ups about the Wii is the online game codes and the major jaggies on my 46″ hdtv. The graphics are perfectly fine… I thought Mario Galaxy was beautiful, but I wish they upped the resolution capacity to 720p with antialiasing. Looking at games like Brawl just makes me cry, because it never had a chance with those jagged edges.

  40. 40. toocan Says:

“If you have followed my writing over the past few years”

    HAHAHA.

    who are you again?

    HAHAHA.

  41. 41. cb37 Says:

In one of the comments, it was mentioned how in 5 years people who bought a Wii will be selling them for $50 at yard sales…this is true for any console. It’s definitely a latest-greatest market.

I like the Wii because just about anyone can pick up the controller and play. I agree that it shouldn’t be called the greatest console ever, and I think that’s the one thing everyone’s overlooking in this article.

Nothing should be the greatest console ever…except maybe the Atari 2600 (haha!)

  42. 42. Keith Says:

When I go to my friend’s house, every now and then I’ll play the Wii, it’s alright. The PS3, with the games I’ve seen and played, is failure. I kinda like the 360, it’s got some good games and I like the way the controller is.

But all this aside, my quad-core computer can man-handle any of the current consoles… nothing beats a keyboard and mouse when it comes to control.

    *goes back to playing Crysis*

  43. 43. Unknown Says:

the wii is just a gimicky party console. You can count the good games with a single player mode on one hand. and i’m only talking about games exclusive to the wii. madden isn’t made to play on the wii, it’s made for the great graphics and animations and the little things that you can only notice on a real next generation system. i’ve never played my wii without a couple of friends around except for zelda, super mario galaxy, and paper mario. besides those it’s more fun to play the other games with people.

  44. 44. Terry Says:

You launched a post that would start a flame war… with Nintendoheads… the most rabid of the Fanboys…

Bravo, your hits must be through the roof.

But the post does have a point in the flame worthy post.

The Wii more often doesn’t live up to the promise of gameplay, at least that’s my personal opinion. I’m one of the huddled masses who looked all over to find one, and except for about 5 titles, I’m bored to tears with it.

Even not couting on the graphics… yes bored.

Oh, and yea, I do care about the graphics, and gameplay… but you must hit one so far out of the park if you don’t want the other to matter at all.

I have not found one single 360/PS3 game who’s graphics make ok/bad gameplay ok… NOR have i found one single game on the Wii who makes the gameplay so amazing that I don’t care about it’s last Gen Graphics.

Flame if you want but I just dinged all current gen consoles.

  45. 45. Alienange Says:

@Ady - You sir, are delirious.
#8 - lol … is that the best you got?
#7 - “There is a lot of dross on the Wii; just like there was on the PS2 and PS1″ Are you cooked? Will said the games are “poorly made” and out number the well made games 8 to 2. No other system had this kind of ratio!
#6 - You know nothing about the next gen consoles. Your list is bust.
#4 - “designed to put you off trying to play online” You admit it’s crap! Nice one! A next gen system designed to put you off online play ! Fail.
#2 - The classic controller has the cord coming out the bottom. Innovatively crap.
#1 - Defending the Wii because it’s just as powerful as last gen? That’s just retarded.

@Keith - You’re absolutely right. But paying $400 for a graphics card rather than a ps3/360 doesn’t interest me anymore. PC will always have you running in circles hoping your system will play the latest games.

  46. 46. Ady Says:

    @Alienage

    Shh! Adults are talking!

Learn to construct a coherent counter-argument and get back to me.

Anyone who can read is aware that I said the Wii’s online features ALMOST feel like they were designed to put people of playing online. I didn’t say they actually were. That would be silly as OBVIOUSLY, no company would actually do this.

And what does a cord have to do with innovation exactly? And how else would you expect a controller to connect to the wireless remote without it? By magic? I suggest applying some thought to what you write before you start.

Regarding #1, I said the Wii is “at least” as powerful as the strongest last gen console. If you have problems with basic comprehension, I advise you return to school.

Oh, and you don’t actually know what “delirious” means, do you?

Silly, silly boy. Run along now.

  47. 47. Will Snizek Says:

@Terry: Nintendo fanboys are definitely the most rabid. I obviously knew that before I posted this. I do mean everything I said, and honestly you’ll get flamed for saying anything even slightly bad about the Wii for some reason. I’m certainly curious about fanboys considering I have never been one. I’ve owned every Nintendo system, but also every SEGA, Atari, Sony and Microsoft system through the years. I never really see myself as die-hard loyal towards any of them. I can see the good and bad in each system.

  48. 48. Bensei Says:

About 5: I’d be glad if they even support things the Originals did. Operation Wolf had NES Zapper support, but doesn’t have Pointer support on the VC yet. I’m also sure Nintendo hasn’t released Duck Hunt and Co. yet because they are just too lazy emulating a pointer function into a NES ROM. Hopefully, they will bring it to Wiiware instead

  49. 49. OogaChagga Says:

I don’t get the graphics knocks, myself.
If the goal is to look as photo-realistic as possible, then indeed, Wii falls short.

But the overwhelming, vast majority of PS3/360 graphics-fests thus far do nothing *with* the graphics. Oh look, it looks vaguely realistic. Ah, but the control scheme sucks, the graphics don’t create an immersive, unique world, and I’m officially bored stiff.

I don’t get why there must be console wars in the first place. I feel the Wii has proven itself superior to PS3 and Wii. He over there feels differently. Big whoop, is this truly something to argue over? I’ll enjoy my Wii — especially now that I was able to dump 360 off as a gift for a cousin — and you can enjoy whichever console you choose. Whether that be PS3, 360, Wii, or Atari 7800 for all I care.

  50. 50. oldguy Says:

Not all games with Mario in them are cool. Paper Mario sucks!

  51. 51. Ady Says:

You know, this whole fanboy thing baffles me.

It is often said that so-called Nintendo fanboys are the most voiciferous, but in my experience, they are no more so than any other type of fanboy. Furthermore, it seems that all it takes for someone to be classed a Nintendo fanboy is for them to disagree with ANY negative appraisal of the company. For instance, you like something about the Wii that another person doesn’t, that somehow makes you a rabid Nintendo fanboy, no mater how measured and rational you are.

Consequently a Sony fanboy can be as obnoxious and delusional as they wish and no-one says anything. Further to that point, it’s not unusual to find Sony fanboys swearing blind the PS3 and PSP are outselling the competition (either that or they’ll exaggerate one weekly sales spike), yet such unabashed denial of reality is never questioned. The existence of sites like SDF are examples of this brand of fanboyism that is conveniently ignored.

And before anybody tries to label me, I own several systems and have no allegiance to one particular company. I just happen to think the Wii is a very good machine with some enjoyable software. Sorry.

  52. 52. Alienange Says:

    @Ady

Oh good. You’re one of those commentors who thinks he’s an adult talking to children. Nice one. Thank goodness Will doesn’t take criticism as poorly as you do.

I was simply pointing out that if their customers start feeling that the Wii ALMOST feels like it was designed to put people off playing online, then that is one titanic failure on their part.

I also believe you’ve heard of the Wii’s “innovative” new controller? That would include the nun chuck attachment and classic controller attachment would it not? The classic controller should have stayed true to the “cord out the top” design. The cord coming out of the bottom is just annoying.

“The Wii is at least as powerful as the strongest last gen console.”
That is exactly what you said. Why you think it’s s a complement is a mystery to me.

If you’re suggesting that I used the word “delirious” incorrectly then I highly suggest a new dictionary for the Ady household.

  53. 53. Will Snizek Says:

    @Ady:

Trust me.. Nintendo fanboys are the most active and attacking of all fanboys. That’s probably a plus for Nintendo because they obviously have the top brand loyalty out of all console makers.

There’s also no reason to think that no one says anything about Sony or Microsoft fanboys. This post just had nothing to do with either.
