We’ve All Heard it, The Wilhelm Scream: Video Games [UPDATED]

The faint yell you’ve heard in ALL 6 Star Wars films is the legendary scream called ‘The Wilhelm Scream’. After playing Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid 4 and God of War I and II, I can confirm the infamous scream is also in video games. After reading up on the history of ‘The Wilhelm Scream’ it seems it has been used in 170 movies, 15 TV shows and 26 38 37 48 53 Video Games. That sound is so noticeable that when I hear it on any media, I’ll instantly look at my wife for confirmation. Then we both ask “This movie has it too?”
Below are the list of video games that include ‘The Wilhelm Scream’:
- Ant City (When someone is run over by a car.)
- Army Of Two (During the China cutscene)
- Battlefield 2: Modern Combat
- Bionic Commando: Rearmed
- Call of Duty 2
- Civilization: Revolution (DS version)
- Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (Occasionally when killing infantry)
- Dirk Valetine and the Fortress of Steam (Sometimes when you kill a guard)
- Dungeon Keeper (When a warlock is being tortured)
- Eragon (Demo: When Brom shoots the ropes holding the gate up and the gate collapses)
- Grand Theft Auto IV
- Grand Theft Auto:San Andreas (When you kill a gangster)
- God of War (When you kill the man holding the bridge on the Rooftops of Athens. Also during a later cinematic scene where Kratos leads his troops into a church)

- Hellgate: London (In the open cinematic, when one of the Hunters is killed by a demon)

- Legendary (During the trailer for the game, when a goblin trows a man out the window)

- Mass Effect (During first mission, when Richard L. Jenkins is shot)

It was also in Lair in the end (I think their next to last clip after you destroy a tower), when a certain guy fell off of their religious tower…

Any chance of a video game compilation vid?
I’m scared now..I have to start listening for this. They probably don’t even release how much it’s used, but it’s likely to be in a lot of sound libraries.
compilation vid is a good idea. there really isn’t one that covers it completely at this point
@Anna, it’s real crazy. I had no idea how deep the scream went. For a long time, I thought it was originally from Star Wars and I hear it all the time on television and in random movies. Sometimes I’ll think my mind is just playing tricks on me lol..

Hi, the Wilhelm is not used in GTA San Andreas, although there are similar sounding screams. The Wilhelm is definitely used in GTA4 though, in the ‘Final Interview’ mission when you have killed the lawyer there is a guard stood at the top of one of the flights of stairs on the way out of the building… if you shoot him he will ‘Wilhelm’ as he topples down. Hope this helps.
actually, the “Wilhelm scream is used in San Andreas. There are 5 or 6 variations of the scream and they are all considered the “Wilhelm” scream because they were different takes from the same actor and same movie.

Bionic Commando: Rearmed can be added to the list. I heard it multiple times while playing the top-down portions (I think it happens sometimes after shooting a guy on a motorcycle. Doesn’t happen all the time, but it DOES happen)
Sorry for the double-post, but I just remembered that it was also in the DS version of Civilization Revolution. I also own the 360 version, but I don’t remember it there.
@Cole. You are right about Bionic Commando: Rearmed. I was playing it earlier and thought I heard it, but wasn’t certain.
