[Editor's Note: Walking down the aisles of your favorite retailer you'll see movies that you've never heard of. Even if you'd like to know how they fare no one cares enough to review them! That's where "Movie Watch" comes in...oh, and we'll try to cover movies on Xbox Live from time to time. Because if you're gonna spend those confusing Microsoft points on something other than games, it better be worth it, right?]

“Raising Jeffrey Dahmer” premiered at the Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee in 2006. Two years later and instead of a wide release it received the straight-to-DVD treatment; understandably so.

While we get that the movie was made on a low budget, the story, acting, and progression are lacking regardless of production costs.

The movie is set up as a boring back and forth conversation between the father and mother of Jeffrey Dahmer, who committed numerous murders in the early 90s, and tries to assemble a story through grainy, distorted flashbacks that are incredibly ineffective.

Instead of concentrating on Dahmer’s remorse for his butcheries they turn to his father’s love for him and his incessant neglect to notice all the things that made him the “monster” he became.

It could’ve been an interesting story, but the fact that all the actors come off unconvincing with little inspiration on film makes “Raising Jeffrey Dahmer”’s 85 minutes a painfully dull feature to sit through. There are scenes where they try to conjure up some tension between father and son but ultimately fail as the movie never establishes a bond between them to begin with.

One scene of equal insanity that instills laughter, rather than dread, is the grandmother’s willingness to play cards right after her grandson’s been arrested.

A detective shoots himself right outside of their house?

“Meh! Let’s go back inside the house and pretend it never happened seconds later!”

The story of “Raising Jeffrey Dahmer” is interesting enough, but there’s no compelling reason to watch. Its “lesson” is presented in plain black and white with no room for gray areas or complexity.

It takes simple stabs at what the possible cause for the creation of the “monster” could’ve been but never leads you one way or the other and fails to give you enough evidence to come up with your own conclusion.

Skip this one when you see it on the shelf of your favorite retailer…it reeks of “Generic Brand.”

I guess I’ll skip this one. I am really into movies that explore the lives of the infamous, but it sounds like they don’t break any ground with this one…

  2. 2. Jules Says:

I can’t walk away from the dollar price-tag for this flick at Redbox - I have to give it a try. Thanks for the review…

  3. 3. larhule Says:

I just suckered myself into renting this last night. I searched to find a review of this movie, having now seen it, because I knew it would be torn into. Fuck…what a pile of crap this movie is… The only even remotely redeeming quality is the few somewhat interesting bits of score performed by a small assemblage of string players. The rest is utter garbage. Your review hit on most of the major problems.

  4. 4. Will Snizek Says:

@larhule: sorry you didn’t catch the review sooner. We noticed there weren’t many places mentioning it online.

  5. 5. Ed Says:

I’m watching this movie right now and and am bored outta my mind. The acting is quite bad and the flashbacks are painful.

  6. 6. Carlos Macias Says:

    Oh, yes…they sooo are.

  7. 7. Johnny Says:

His parents are right-wing twits who never accepted his being gay, and still don’t. They blame his homosexuality, when they should blame their own ignorant homophobia, if anything.

  8. 8. matt bozic Says:

I got suckered in to this bullshit movie too. Im watching it now, not really, I’m warning the public not to rent it. I think I’m gonna go throw up now…
