Whenever I read a Greenpeace report, I take it’s findings with a grain of salt. After all, we are talking about an organization that could technically be classified as a terrorist group. We’re also talking about the same group that believes chlorine should be universally banned, despite the fact that it’s probably one of the most important and helpful chemicals in society today.

Their most recent report basically claims that video game consoles can be hazardous to our health due to various chemicals used to build the machines. Should we take their word for it? I’d say that it’s a good idea to pressure game companies to have better environmental safety measures, but you definitely can’t take this report at face value. However, some of the concerns raised are worth looking into. What do you think?

The game consoles all contained high levels of bromine - used in circuit boards and plastic casings. Brominated flame retardants do not break down easily and build up in the environment. Long-term exposure can lead to impaired learning and memory functions. They can also interfere with thyroid and oestrogen hormone systems and exposure in the womb has been linked to behavioural problems.

Components of the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation3 also contained high levels of phthalates, one of which – DEHP – is known to interfere with sexual development in mammals: including humans and, especially, males.
